Athletes often realize that giving back to society is quite important. For Jack Nicklaus, this realization came decades ago. Alongside his wife, Barbara, he has been part of several larger-than-life ventures. For years now, the two have stepped up and done whatever possible to give back to society. And this week they have done so yet again. This time raising nearly half a million dollars for the children!

The 18-time PGA Tour winner has probably hosted and participated in hundreds of charitable ventures over the last couple of decades. Each time, it seems like he only outdoes himself. Recently, the 83-year-old was once again part of an event that went on to raise $440,000. Jack and Barbara, of course, didn’t do this alone; as per a recent South Florida PGA report, they had help from 60 PGA and LPGA professionals.

The pros headed over to the PGA National course in South Florida on Monday this week to compete over 81 holes. The twist in their game was that each birdie any of the professionals made was backed by donor pledges. Playing a scramble format, the 30 teams of two each sought out as many birdies as possible.

All the proceeds from the Honda Classic Cares Play Yellow Birdie Bash Monday went towards the South Florida PGA Foundation and the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. While Nicklaus’ foundation focuses on children’s healthcare, the SF PGA Foundation administers various outreach programs like Smiling for Life and Habitat for Humanity, which use golf as a tool to enhance the lives of people.

Following the epic on-course battle to raise money and awareness, Jack and Barbara addressed the crowd and the professionals, thanking them for their generous contributions. “It is great to see our section do so well,” said the 73-time PGA Tour winner, who was more than grateful to see so many play a role in giving back to society.
