Gary Player needs no introduction. The legendary player took the game of golf to a different height, along with his contemporaries like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. At the time of his retirement, he had a total of nine major championships under his belt as well as 150 professional overall wins over seven decades.

In 1974, this world-class golfer was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Now, all of these achievements, it appears, came by virtue of his efficient swinging of the club. At least that played some part. The legend recently shed light on a swinging trick that worked miracles for him throughout his career. Let’s find out more about that.

Although it is quite uncanny for an 87-year-old to be actively posting on social media, Player appears young at heart and actively posts in relation to practice sessions and golf tips on Instagram. He keeps his followers amused. Previously, he had shared his valuable advice on bunker hits. And now, he has posted an Instagram story that gives a glimpse into his downswing shot.

In his story, a picture of him can be seen with his tips in quotes. “Initiating the downswing with your hips and legs is crucial to better and more consistent ball striking. All your power comes from your legs and core.” These are golden words and many up-and-coming golfers can benefit from his tips not a little.

How crucial is a downswing in golf?

A downswing is a very crucial shot in golf that generally happens after a backswing. It is basically the motion of bringing the club down in order to hit the ball. And this shot is required on all categories of golf courses. This is like the fundamental of the golf swing; without it, a golfer cannot strike the ball properly.

Regardless of the course type, such as sloping greens, hazards, narrow fairways, a links course by the sea, or a desert course, a proper downswing serves as a savior. It can help achieve lower scores on a consistent basis, and a better grip is key for the ball-striking.

Not for nothing is Player a legend in the golfing world. What do you think of this downswing shot? Have you tried it yourself? Let us know in the comments below.
