‘Good Partner to Have’: LIV Golf Defector Dustin Johnson Makes a Honest Confession About Father-In-Law Wayne Gretzky’s Golf Game

Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky tied the knot in April last year. However, that was his wife’s entry into the sports kingdom. Now Mrs. Johnson is the daughter of the legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky, with whom DJ too shares a close bond. Undoubtedly, their athleticism has drawn the golf pro and the NHL star close; however, the two also extend a lot of support to each other in their personal lives.

When Johnson took a break from the sport in 2014 to sort out his drug addictions, it was Wayne’s words that helped him. The hockey star ordered him to clean up his act if he wanted the wedding to take place. And that’s exactly what he did! Amid their multi-faceted relationship, though, this time it’s their athleticism that grabs the spotlight, with DJ delivering some candid words about his father-in-law’s golf game!

Dustin Johnson opens up about his father-in-law being a great partner

A couple of years ago, Wayne Gretzky, an avid golfer, made it clear that he was not a golf or life guru for Dustin Johnson. He claimed instead that the duo shares a long-term friendship and often discusses family, sports, and even TV shows. However, even though he may not be DJ’s golf guru, as per the LIV star’s recent statements, he sure is a “good partner.”

In a recent Instagram video by 4 Aces Golf Club, Dustin Johnson opens up about his father-in-law’s golf game. “Playing with Wayne is a lot of fun. He loves golf, and he always has a good time when we are playing. So I enjoy it. And yeah, he’s a good partner,” he stated. “He’s probably about a 9/10 handicap and makes a lot of pars. He makes some birdies, so he’s always a good partner.”

On multiple occasions, Wayne and DJ have partnered up on the course, including at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Sherwood Country Club in California. Gretzky, even though he is a ten handicapper, makes some great pars and birdies, as per the LIV golf star.

Clearly, Johnson and Wayne are just as good a fit on the course as they are off it. The two-time major champion in the past has shown how much he respects the NHL star, once with the shoes he wore!

For his tribute to Wayne Gretzky Last year, DJ paid homage to Gretzky at the Genesis Invitational in February. While playing at the event, the golf pro donned a pair of gorgeous Adidas TOUR360 22 shoes. While at first glance the shoes may have looked like an ordinary pair, they were in fact made to showcase the ice hockey legend’s achievements.

The colors and designs on them represented the moments Wayne had spent on the field and a few of his notable wins. Moreover, the 99 number on the shoes was Wayne’s jersey number for the majority of his career!

Such is the relationship between the two. Even prior to his grand victory at the 2020 Masters, Wayne Gretzky had encouraged Johnson. The NHL legend told Dustin Johnson to never settle. He inspired the golfer to expand his limits, develop a winning mindset, and hence become a force to be reckoned with on the course!
