Winning a regular event on the PGA Tour is not easy. Make that event a major championship, and the challenge only gets harder. Now also imagine achieving that at the age of 50. There is only one person out there knows what that feels like. The legendary Phil Mickelson, who in 2021, broke the record to become the oldest player to ever win a championship.

The fans, the media, and the spectators were all curious to know what served as his inspiration and motivated him; his answer was unexpected. “I’m very inspired by Tom Brady,” he said.

Lefty’s 6th major victory

Mickelson went on to win his sixth major championship in 2021. On the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Phil Mickelson went on to write history, becoming the oldest player to win a major, doing so weeks before he turned 51. He won the tournament with a 2-stroke lead, but it wasn’t as easy as it seemed.

At the end of Round 1, Phil was eighth on the scoreboard, having shot 70 on the 72-par course. Phil wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. By the end of the third round, he had made his way to the top of the score chart. He started the final round with a 2-stroke lead over Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen.

Mickelson to win the tournament in style. He ended it with a shot from the rough straight into the hole. The whole crowd cheered and erupted with excitement. Phil had gone on to grab one of the most iconic wins, and he did so with an iconic strike. Both he, and the golf community would remember that day forever.

How did Tom Brady inspire Phil Mickelson?

After the match, everyone had a question for Mickelson. In an interview with ESPN, he spoke about his inspiration and motivation. “He’s actually a big motivation,” said Phil, talking about the legendary NFL superstar, Tom Brady. Lefty explained, “Because of how hard he works to be the best and to elongate his career.”

Mickelson looks to Tom Brady for inspiration, and rightly so. The star quarterback has won a total of seven Super Bowls. The last one came three months before Mickelson’s win. Notably, Brady won his seventh championship at the age of 43, which is an extraordinary accomplishment in the NFL. Mickelson aspires to be like him by playing his best game for as long as possible.

Brady was also very pleased with Phil’s victory. “Amazing congrats Phil Mickelson!” Brady said in his post. “The thrill of victory and inspiring for us all.” It is clear both athletes have tons of respect for each other and value the other’s talent and achievements.
