What would you choose, the Super Bowl XVII or the Waste Management Phoenix Open? While the fans do have a choice, the PGA Tour pros playing this week may not. And Justin Thomas is certainly torn up about it, given that he may have to miss it!
After two rounds and a putter change, JT is now eyeing the WM Phoenix Open trophy. Tied for 5th, just 4 strokes behind the leader, the man from Alabama University is undoubtedly in contention and may just be able to break his 2-year-long winless drought. But that’s not the only thing on his mind this week! Alongside lifting the trophy, the golf pro wants one more thing—to watch the Super Bowl!

In the press conference following the second round, Thomas expressed his desire to not miss out on part of the NFL finale. Frosty weather has plagued the event this week, and it now threatens to push the final round of the Phoenix Open from Sunday to Monday, which could cause the golf pro to miss the mega face-off.
Dubbing the recent weather on the West Coast “a bummer,” JT made it clear he didn’t want to miss the game. “I will take missing the first quarter and a half or two quarters if that means we don’t have to finish on Monday.”
Although he was well aware that he could do nothing about it and stated, “It is what it is,” the 15-time PGA Tour winner claimed that he wanted both. “I very much hope that I somehow can watch the Super Bowl, but I also hope I’m holding a trophy. If both of those can happen, that’s what I choose.”
Only time will tell whether Thomas will be able to achieve his ideal picture of the trophy in one hand and the remote to the Superbowl (or tickets, given the golf pro’s passion for football) in the other. But with his recent moves, like his mid-game equipment change, it certainly seems like he’s working towards that dream!

After a very average 2-under-par round on Friday, Justin Thomas decided to change his putter back to his old one. In his bag was an elevated version of the Scotty Cameron X 5.5 putter that he was trying out this week, and it seemed to just not suit his style.
The improvement was almost immediate for JT, who went from a meager 2 under in the first round to a 6 under, 65 on Saturday. “There’s something about something you’re comfortable with,” said the PGA Tour star after the round, confirming that it had been his putter change—that even his caddie, ‘Bones’ Mackey, had suggested he make—that had made all the difference!

Now Thomas needs to just keep working his old putter’s magic to try and grab a win. And while he does that, he’ll certainly be praying to the weather gods for a better weekend so that he can have the best of both the golf and NFL worlds.
