The tension between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has existed since the Saudi-backed tour was initiated. Now, as the premier golf leagues proceed toward a harmonious future in the wake of the $3 billion merger, the dust still hasn’t completely settled. If anything, golfers on the PGA Tour are having a tough time accepting the upcoming changes.
While epic players like Tiger Woods are influencing reforms to keep the PGA Tour’s identity intact, veteran stakeholders such as Tom Watson are raising their doubts to the board. Meanwhile, PGA Tour loyalist Rory McIlroy keeps his dislike toward the rebel league intact.

Is McIlroy coming around on the idea of the merger or not?
While the proficient golfers prepare for the ultimate challenge at Ryder Cup, the Irishman sat down with Off The Ball for a chat about his perception of LIV Golf. The reporter pointed out that early on, Rory McIlroy was one of the few players who openly stated their dislike of where the money for the PIF’s circuit comes from. However, as things have progressed over the past couple of months, the 34-year-old PGA Tour loyalist shared his train of thoughts. He still appears miffed.
According to the former world no. 1, he has spent 4 years of his life in Dubai and has many close friends who “have the same beliefs as some of these people we are criticizing.” He also shared that he had conversations with PIF’s governor Yasir Al Rumayyan and after a lot of thought and taking into account public views, he has come to a tentative conclusion.
“If we provide them a pathway where they’re not taking over the sport, it neutralizes the threat of LIV becoming something it hopefully shouldn’t become,” said the 23-time PGA Tour winner. In his opinion, the PIF has infiltrated several sporting worlds before.

The Northern Irishman has long made it clear that he is not thrilled about the merger. But if the boundaries are defined, perhaps the American and Saudi circuits can coexist. He is taking it with a pinch of salt.
