The Grant Thornton Invitational began this Friday and displayed an exciting round of scramble for the golf world to enjoy. Being the only mixed event, it has gained many supporters, however, Nelly Korda from Team FiNelly (Tony Finau-Nelly Korda) remarked in a round-1 press conference why it should stay the only event.

Korda and Finau are currently charting the event leaderboard as they shot a 16 under 56 and pushed ahead of all the teams. The duo had a bogey-free round with 14 birdies coming off of a stride in doing the unthinkable. As evident, Korda did enjoy playing, however, when asked about advocating for more such mixed events, she explained, “I think it’s fun, but again, that’s what makes this event so special, because it’s just one of one.”

The 25-year-old clarified that the Invitational aimed to “push women’s and men’s golf forward” with the mixed event and they have successfully done that. So far, Korda is “enjoying” her play as it is the first time she has come close to experiencing the men’s golf one-on-one.

Paired with Lexi Thompson and Rickie Fowler for the first tee time, the 1x major champion was particularly intrigued to watch Fowler “play up close”. The 8-time LPGA winner then explained why the event while advocating for a great cause has also made her come par with her sister, Jessica Korda.
