Did Nelly Korda truly outshine Lydia Ko, or was the Player of the Year title debatable?

What an exceptional run Nelly Korda had in the 2024 LPGA Tour season. She managed to bag a total of six wins in just a year, five of which were consecutive. And of course, not to forget that her worst finish too was in the top 30. She finished at T26 in the Amundi Evian Championship.

Nelly Korda took a break after the Kroger Queen City Championship in September and was set to return in October with the BMW Ladies Championship. However, she faced a neck injury during the practice round and could not make it to the Fall Asian swing of the Tour. But this absence did not dampen her accolades.

On November 3, as the 2024 TOTO Japan Classic concluded, Nelly Korda was announced as the 2024 Rolex Player of the Year. She became the second consecutive American to earn the award after Lilia Vu clinched it last year. “Winning the Rolex Player of the Year means so much to me,” said Korda on receiving the award.

“This season has had its highs and challenges, and I’m just really grateful for the people around me who have helped me get here. It’s been a team effort, and I’m proud to share this moment with them.” The LPGA Tour also posted a picture of her posing with the trophy. In the caption, they wrote, Introducing your 2024 @rolex Player of the Year, @nellykorda! 🏆 Congratulations, Nelly! 👏”.

While Nelly Korda evidently deserves to get the title, given her extensive performance throughout the year, it turns out some of them think Lydia Ko is worthy of the title. After all, she also had a hell of a year, and was the closest competitor Korda had this year.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Nelly Korda truly outshine Lydia Ko, or was the Player of the Year title debatable?

Have an interesting take?

Lydia Ko, too, has had an exceptional season this year. Currently in fourth position at the Rolex Rankings, the New Zealand star has grabbed three wins on the LPGA Tour including a major. She also finished a close second at the LPGA Drive-On Championship. Taking this, one of them wrote, “Any votes for Lydia Ko?”

Apart from that, she also bagged the gold medal for her country at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This earned her the final point she needed for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame. The 27-year-old reached this milestone, thanks to an exceptional career, which includes 22 career victories, two Rolex LPGA Player of the Year awards, two Glenna Collett Vare Trophies for the season’s lowest scoring average, and of course her International victory.

While taking to this, one of them commented in her favor and wrote, “Lydia Ko should have won.” Another replied by saying, “These ladies on the tour have a very well thought out system of rewards! Lydia is now in their hall of fame, which is a tougher get than the PGA! Love to both champs!❤️❤️!!” This was clearly an attempt to try to be neutral for both the LPGA Tour professionals.

Apart from the wins, Nelly Korda has another set of accolades earned this year. Having secured six wins in one season, with a Solheim Cup victory and the Player of the Year Award, she became the only third golfer to do so. She has joined forces with Beth Daniel and Annika Sorentsam. Taking to this, several comments read, “Congratulations, awesome accomplishment,” “Well deserved! Congrats Nelly!”, “The best swing in golf, well deserved 👏” , “Bravo!!!!👏👏🙌🙌 Well done and well deserved ❤️” ,”Nelly doing Nelly things!”

It has been almost two months since Nelly Korda has not played professional golf. However, before the LPGA Tour 2024 season comes to an end, there are three more events left to take place. This also includes the prestigious CME Group Tour Championship. Taking to this, another motivated her and wrote, “Congratulations @nellykorda ! Now …. Let’s win 🏆 🏆 more this year !!!! The @theannikalpga and the @cmegrouptourchamp ! I’ll take the @pncchampionship and @grantthorntoninv as well. Not too much to ask for !!! Let’s do it !!!!”
