After a hectic week that saw the biggest names in golf go head-to-head at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, the action now heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge. The 120-player field this year will be headlined by the likes of Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and more.

Dallas-born Scheffler, who recently returned to World No. 1 after his Oak Hill heroics, is one of the favorites leading up to the event. Addressing the press conference prior to the tournament, however, the golfer spoke extensively about fellow Dallas native and World No. 11 Jordan Spieth! So, what exactly did the 2022 Masters winner have to say about Spieth? Let’s find out!

Two of the biggest heavyweights in the game, Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth, have grown up competing against each other in Texas. Spieth, who is almost three years older, burst onto the scene first, picking up his first major title with a Masters win at the age of 21.

Seven years later, Spieth’s fellow University of Texas alum, Scheffler, became a major winner himself, claiming the highly coveted Green Jacket at Augusta. After years of competing in various events together, the two are now back on Texas soil for the impending Charles Schwab Challenge.

Before the event kicked off, the World No. 1 went on to shed light on the success of Texas-born golfers on the PGA Tour in recent times, especially heaping praise on 3-time major winner Spieth. “He [Spieth] was always a few years ahead of me and crushing it from a young age,” Scheffler shared. “He’s always been a guy that’s given me great advice, and he’s such a talented player.

Shedding light on his childhood, the PGA Tour pro shared that golfers in Texas learned to play various types of shots growing up. “I feel like Jordan and I are pretty similar in the way we like to play shots. We’re not really — I would say that neither of us really have perfect golf swings, to say the least,” he noted. Unlike Scheffler, Spieth wasn’t as successful in the year’s second major and could only muster up a T29 finish at Oak Hill.

The field at the Charles Schwab Challenge and prize purse

The Charles Schwab Challenge begins Thursday at the Colonial Golf Club in Texas. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will aim to keep the momentum going and achieve a victory at the PGA Tour event. Meanwhile, fellow Texan Spieth will want to bounce back to form after his not-so-memorable performance last week.

One of the biggest presences at the event this week is none other than club pro Michael Block, who blew golf fans away with his stellar T15 finish at Oak Hill. Defending champion Sam Burns, who beat Scheffler last year, is also part of the Charles Schwab Challenge field. Other top contenders include World No. 7 Max Homa, No. 12 Tony Finau, and 17th-ranked Collin Morikawa.

The players will compete for an incredible purse of $8.7 million, out of which the winner will take home $1.56 million in earnings.
