Nick Taylor’s win at the last RBC Canadian Open was momentous. He had put an end to a 69-year-long drought and became the first Canadian to win the title since 1954. The instant required a grand celebration, and to do that, another Canadian professional golfer, Adam Hadwin, stepped on the greens of Oakdale G&CC. What followed next is still an incident that induces much humor.

Hadwin was not recognized when he went on the greens to celebrate with Nick Taylor with a bottle of champagne. In a matter of a few seconds, he was tackled down by a security guard and instantly went viral. Almost a year later, Hadwin met the same security guard. He shared a photo with him on his social media with the caption, “Water under the bridge!”. The post was reposted by Golf on CBS, who reminded the golf world, along with a photo from last year, “Adam Hadwin and the security guard who tackled him last year.”

Hadwin revealed in an interview with Bob Weeks about how he never held a grudge for the incident. This time, when he saw the security guard once more, they shared smiles. He recalled, “As soon as he recognized me, we both had huge smiles on our faces. I’ve said this from the beginning. I wasn’t hurt, I didn’t have any effects from it. I certainly don’t blame him; it was just one of those incidents. We shook hands, shared a few laughs, and I got him to pose for a picture with me.”

Reminiscing over the hilarious tackle down, Hadwin also said, “I do remember specifically the officer that came behind the security guard, telling me to drop the bottle. I remember those words and I have an appreciation for authority.” When the golf industry again encountered the two, they complimented the tackle and how both parties acted towards each other.

Golf Industry recalls the security guard’s top-notch tackle

One of the fans scrutinized the tackle from a year ago. They wrote, “Head to the side, hit with the shoulder, drive through with the legs. Textbook tackle.” As a security guard, Mr. X, as he wished to remain anonymous, portrayed some excellent skills at tackling, which the golf fans recognized and appreciated. They credited him for pulling such a move instantly, as his job required it.

Another fan stated how they wish the security guard would have his job at the Canadian Open every year. They said, “He needs to be security at every Canadian open for the rest of his career.” In Bob Week’s interview, Mr. X did indeed affirm his presence even at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open, but he said that he would like to be in disguise.

Yet another fan paid attention to the fact that Adam Hadwin accepted the situation with great maturity. They suggested, “18th hole flag on the play – “we have unnecessary roughness on the security guard”. And necessary forgiveness. Well done Adam. Good luck this weekend.” Even if the security guard was just doing his job, many people might take the incident with a grain of salt. However, Hadwin, even with his reputation, made light of the whole incident and met the security guard with much warmth. This reaction from him made the golf world applaud his spirits.

One other fan reflected on how the whole incident was funny. They said, “Hilarious! One of the most memorable non-golf, golf moments in modern history! I laugh every single time I see it.” But the incident was funny because both parties acted righteously and peacefully. Specifically, Adam Hadwin’s sportsmanship made the situation humorous. If he had taken offense instead, the incident might have gone down a different path.

Someone else pointed out that this time around, Hadwin was holding his identity card to show the security guard. They said, “I’m glad you decided to show him your credentials this yr. No one is above the law Adam. How dare you put security in that situation, sir.” Last year, security approached Hadwin because he was not able to detect any identification or credentials and hence felt a breach. But Adam Hadwin made sure that he would not make the same mistake again.
