There are many sports personas who have admired Michael Jordan over the course of his career and even after his retirement for his innate talents. While icons such as Tiger Woods went on to memorialize the basketball star with their own performance in golf, few had the opportunity to get to know the legend in person. Of course, Woods also plays with him regularly, and their friendship is cemented.

However, it is rare that MJ has personal interactions with golfers and their caddies, in particular. Why wouldn’t it be? His Airness plays golf for the sport not professionally. Caddies are hardly present during those instances. But can you imagine meeting the big man and failing to impress him?

Back in the late 90s, John Burke, a celebrated caddy was enjoying his time on the golf course. The Ryder Cup was his favorite event during his career while he caddied for veteran golfers such as Davis Love, Jon Curran, Bill Haas, and Brad Faxon. In 1997, it was his second Ryder Cup event with Brad Faxon and he had the most thrilling experience: Meeting and disappointing Michael Jordan. He shared the details during the SubPar podcast.

“It’s my second Ryder Cup, not as bad as the first one,” he started, laughing upon remembering the day. “I turn over there and I look, and it’s Michael Jordan, right? And no one knows he’s there. This is the first time he’s ever gone.” It must have been a shocking yet exhilarating moment for the veteran caddy to come face to face with the man that most of the sporting world admired even at that time.

“He looks at me and he gives me this manly fist pump. You know, like Jordan, only Jordan can do. Right? This is after he won five championships and he was gonna get a six that year,” he continued his story that remains fresh in his mind.

“I’m caught off guard and I gave him the stupidest fist.” John Burke and his host end up sharing a hearty laugh about his disappointing moment but that wasn’t all. “He looked at me like I was the biggest idiot that ever walked. And that was my take from that,” Burke finished his hilarious yet harrowing tale.
