The NBA legend Charles Barkley is no silent admirer of golf. He has often graced the greens with his swing. He has proved himself to be a star on the basketball court. Perhaps that is why he picked up five PGA Tour pros to make up a basketball game.

He is currently at the Tour Championship happening at the East Lake Golf Club course in Atlanta. The whole golf world is biting its nails because Sunday will not end without crowning the champion. Are the five picks of Barkley also close competitors for the crown?

Charles Barkley picks five PGA pros for a basketball team

The NBA legend is a tremendous golf enthusiast. Perhaps he also cannot wait to see who will take the $18 Million and the Tour Champion title home. Unlike his basketball career, his interest in golf has yet to adorn him with success. But that does not stop the legend from taking an interest in the sport.

Despite the rivalry with his alma mater, Auburn University, he picked Justin Thomas, a product of the Alabama Crimson Tide, on his team. He announced his picks at the Tour Championship venue. The PGA Tour’s official Twitter handle posted, “Which players make up Charles Barkley’s starting five?”

“Well, I got to go with Jon Rahm because he’s a neighbor of mine in Scottsdale. I got to go with Wyndham Clark because he’s a neighbor in Scottsdale. I got to go with Max Homa. He’s one of the favorite people in the world,” he said. 

“I love Rory McIlroy. I do think he’s just amazing and phenomenal. So I took three of my homeboys and Rory. Who’s number five? I’m going to go with Justin Thomas, even though he went to sorry a*s Alabama. I still love Justin Thomas,” he added.

While Justin Thomas failed to qualify for the Ryder Cup in September, he made the NBA legend’s list. Charles seems to have a special admiration for Irishman McIlroy. And he thinks he can do well when playing on a hard court. For Barkley, Rory’s body says so. And his strong-looking stature adds to it. The leader at the Tour Championship currently is the Norwegian star Viktor Hovland. He cannot remember playing this well. And the golf world is loving the splendid gameplay. A 4-under 66 allowed him to build a six-shot lead in a sterling performance.

Jon Rahm, however, is out of contention for the FedEx Cup title. He is nine shots behind. Wyndham Clark is also in the same group with one bogey in his round of 68. And Rory McIlroy’s back injury has been a problem for him amid the crowning event.

While Max Homa and Justin Thomas have made their mark in the season, the Tour Championship might be shifting from them as well. But Homa is indeed a favorite of the golf community.
