Bryson DeChambeau is known as one of the most meticulous and analytical golfers in the world. The 30-year-old is famous for his scientific approach to the game, his unconventional equipment, and his incredible power and distance. But, as it turns out, he is not always the most analytical person in the room.

There was a time when DeChambeau made a decision that was not based on logic, data, or calculations. It was a decision that was based on instinct, emotion, and opportunity. It was a decision that changed his life and his career.

A junior golfer’s dream took an unexpected turn

The 8x PGA Tour winner was a talented junior golfer from California who had dreams of playing college golf and eventually turning professional. He had received offers from several schools, but none of them were his top choices. The LIV golfer had offers from Stanford and UCLA, but both schools dropped their offers. However, the golfer did not get disappointed. 

One day, he got a call from a random number. It was Josh Grеgory, the head coach of Southern Methodist University (SMU). Gregory came out to watch him play in the final round of the Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines. Grеgory was impressed by DеChambеau’s performance and then offered him a full scholarship to join the Mustangs.

Hearing the offer, DeChambeau was stunned and ecstatic. The one major winner felt a surge of adrenaline and excitement as he said, “I got chills; my whole body was sick.” He wanted to say yes right away, but he tried to play it cool and wanted to talk to his mom first.

Meanwhile, he did some background checks on his phone and liked what he saw. He saw the Pony logo, the academic reputation, the beautiful campus, and the location in Texas. This is not the first time he has gone to Texas; he had been there before and enjoyed it.

Bryson DeChambeau’s ‘crazy’ decision turned out well

Later that week, he officially committed to SMU without seeing the campus or anything. DеChambеau described his decision as “crazy.” He had made one of the most impulsive decisions of his life, but while talking about his decision, the golfer seemed content and happy. He had no ounce of regret that hinted that his impulsive decision did not work well for him.

In 2012, DеChambеau graduated from SMU, where he had a steady college career. He earned a degree in physics and developed his unique style of golf. In June 2015, he won the NCAA individual championship and the U.S. Amateur in the same year, as he joined an elite club that includes Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. He turned professional in 2016 and quickly rose to the top of the golf world.
