The official ranking of golf players has been going on since 1986. Although the competitiveness the rankings create serves as a great motivator for some players, others do not focus as much on it. Scottie Scheffler is one such player who does not pay a lot of attention to the world rankings. The current world No. 2 claims that he cares a lot more about competing for championships than ranks.

When did Scottie Scheffler rank no. 1 on the OWGR?

Scottie Scheffler first made it to the top of the OWGR charts on March 27 of this year. He was the 25 person to ever do so. Scheffler won the three events, the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, in 43 days to rightfully take the lead.

In 2022, besides the three events that led him to the top, Scottie also won a major. In mid-April, Scheffler competed and won the Masters. He beat the current world number one, Rory McIlroy, by a total of three strokes. Despite Rory ending round four with a magnificent 8 under par, Scheffler went on to claim the trophy.

His win at the Masters ensured Scottie’s place atop the world rankings for a while longer. The American golfer had been at the top of the rankings for more than 5 months straight, but the Irish golfer took his place. Rory won the CJ Cup in October and reclaimed the top spot, pushing Scheffler to the second rank.

Last week, Scheffler could have reclaimed the world No. 1 position had he won or placed second solo at the Mayakoba. The American finished T-3, but the ranking was the last thing on his mind. He said, “I don’t let a ranking define what I think of myself as a player,” and stated that he was more of a self-motivated guy: “All my motivation’s always been internal.” Scheffler explained that he craved good competition more than a top ranking, and that’s why his focus was internal. He said, “I’m a craze, crazy competitive person, so for me, I haven’t really needed much outward focus to kind of get motivated to come out and play.”

Scottie loves the thrill and statement of the competitions. “It’s fun being in those moments, it’s fun being able to compete for championships.” He certainly wants to be the best; he said, “I want to be the best and I want to try and win tournaments out here,” and he believes that the ranking will automatically follow.
