Sergio Garcia was the first guest on LIV Golf’s podcast, Fairway to Heaven, hosted by Jerry Foltz and Su-Ann Heng. The 11-time PGA Tour winner talked about many things, including his unfortunate health scare and the upcoming addition to his LIV Golf team. Among these, the golfer also touched upon a crucial major accolade that he wishes to achieve.
Amidst an array of questions, hosts asked Garcia which is the next major that he wishes to get next, and the golfer was quick to say, “British Open.” The Spaniard expressed gratitude for his lone major win and reminisced over his 2017 Masters victory. The 43-year-old then exclaimed and answered, “The Claret Jug, the British Open… Being European, growing up there. It is obviously as a European is the major that you feel most connected to, and you want to win.”
Garcia then remembered the biggest two wins from his amateur years in Europe: the British Amateur and the British Boys. He now wants to add the Claret Jug to his career victories after those European titles. Continuing his thoughts, he said that he “would love to give myself definitely a couple more chances at it.”
Having been closer to winning the Open in 2007 and 2014, the LIV golfer said, “I’ve been very close. I feel like my last word hasn’t been said there yet.” The 152nd Open will be hosted at Royal Troon on July 14–21, 2024. Will Garcia be eligible to achieve his dream there?
Can Garcia play at the 2024 British Open?
Unlike the Ryder Cup, where, despite Garcia holding the record for highest points (28.5), he could not participate due to his defection to LIV Golf, he may be able to qualify for the 152nd British Open and win the Claret Jug.

The 152nd Open will attract golfers from all around the world through various exemptions and qualifying events. Moreover, the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking will also be eligible for the British Open. However, most LIV golfers are outside the 50 mark, and Garcia himself is at 462nd on the list.
The only way the 43-year-old can fulfil his dream is through the qualifying event that he lost this year. The 2023 British Open was the first one that he had missed since his first time in 1996 as an amateur.
