Ted Scott tricking officials—Is this just good fun or crossing the line in professional golf?

There’s never a shortage of fun stories in the golf world. So here’s another treat for the loyal golf fans. So we all know Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, right? We are sure you also know that he caddied for Bubba Watson for 15 years. The duo was seen together for almost fifteen years, from 1999 to 2017, before they split in 2021. So it’s safe to say that Scott is no short of a seasoned caddie, and it shows in the performances Scheffler puts out.

However, recently Scott has been facing hate on the internet with fans calling his job easy, while it is anything but. A tweet in reply even said, “Scottie Scheffler on Saturday at Valhalla says you’re an idiot.” But we’re not here to talk about that. We are here to tell you a tale of how Teddy made most of his golf world acquaintances, especially Tiger Woods.

In a year-old interview with Leett Putting Hub on YouTube, Scott spilled some beans. He revealed that Watson was not the kind of guy who practiced and this gave Scott a lot of free time. He loved playing in his free time, so what he would do is look for great courses to play at, but we all know how tricky it can be to get entry there. So what would Teddy do? He would use Tiger Woods’s name to gain easy access to golf courses.

Scott revealed that he would sometimes drop Woods’s name to get special treatment at exclusive golf courses. “I say hi my name is Ted Scott at caddy for Bubba Watson and listen my good friend Tiger Woods told me to never name drop so I don’t do that but anyway I was looking to see if I could come out to your course today and play some golf”, said Scott, repeating what he used to say to get the amazing treatment. And you know what? Scott and Woods are not really friends in real life.

Scott also said, with quite certainty, that it worked every time. “So it works every time, every single time; I love it.” Scott had an amazing fifteen years he spent caddying for Watson, and admires his childlike persona. The duo’s split only proved to be a blessing in disguise as it helped Ted Scott become one of the most decorated caddies of all time, especially in 2024.

Why did Ted Scott and Bubba Watson split, and how did it benefit Scott?

Bubba Watson and Ted Scott’s 15-year partnership ended due to Watson’s uncertainty about his future. A wrist injury and his age led to doubts about his ability to continue competing in professional golf. “So I called him and told him. I said, Look, man, I’m 43 years old. I don’t know what I’m going to do. My wrist is killing me,”  said Watson, according to Golf.com.

Their mutual decision to part ways was civilized. Watson acknowledged Scott’s need for a secure decade ahead. “He is like he needs ten more years, and I gave him — I felt like a nice retirement package when we split up, but we split up mutually.” Despite this, Watson has no regrets about the decision, and neither does Scott.

As Scheffler’s caddie, Scott has benefited from the golfer’s incredible success, earning a significant percentage of his winnings.
