Who is better, Scottie Scheffler or Tiger Woods? That’s the million-dollar question every golf enthusiast has tackled at least one time in the past couple of years. The legend of Tiger Woods is definitely unmatched.

Right from the young age of 20, the GOAT started dominating everyone in the world of golf to reach the pinnacle. Scheffler’s journey has been a bit different as he only picked up form after spending 4 years on the PGA Tour. But that is not a clear comparison of their skill level.

Is it the number of trophies they have won in a single season? Because if that’s the case, then Mr. Inevitable again lags behind. Granted that he won 7 titles in 2024 including the impeccable win at Augusta Nationals, but that is still nothing compared to Tiger Woods. The highest Mr. T has won is 9 titles in one season.

So what is it that makes Scottie Scheffler better than or different from Tiger Woods? The latter had something to say about it in a video shared by the PGA Tour on their YouTube channel. A PGA Tour Originals, the video was titled, ‘Scottie 24 | An in-depth look at Scheffler’s historic season’ as it showcased Scheffler’s amazing achievements in the 2024 season.

During one of the segments in the video, there was a comparison drawn between him and Tiger Woods. Being featured in the video himself, the GOAT had something to say about it. Speaking about his own game, Woods said, “I did it differently. My game was very violent at times,” speaking about the aggressive approach of his game. He further added, “We play differently. He slid on it, I snapped on it.”, suggesting that Scheffler’s game is more about finesse while his own strokeplay is focused on power and accuracy.

The 82x PGA Tour winner commented on what he thinks of the world no. 1’s game: “The control of the ball flight is what amazes me the most. The spin, the trajectory, and the shape,” suggesting that Scheffler reads the wind really well and hits the ball accordingly. Matt Fitzpatrick, who was also featured in the video, added, “The ease of it and how it looks. I know he is moving his feet all over the place,” indicating that Scheffler is quite proactive in his strokeplay trying to adapt to the conditions.

This led to Woods’s comments about the drama slayer’s footwork, “Forget all the footwork stuff. If you just sat behind him and you only look at the golf ball, you’d know how tight it is,” assuming that Scheffler likes to stay in control of the collision between the ball and the club. The 5x Masters winner further added, “He doesn’t move the ball very much either way,” suggesting that the 2024 Masters Tournament winner likes to hit straight.

Speaking about how Scheffler ensures his arm swing is calculated, Woods said “You can understand why he (Scottie Scheffler) is able to control the distance into the greens as well as he does.” Fitzpatrick joined the conversation again, stating that Scottie Scheffler doesn’t care about swing technique much, as “He’s just trying to get the ball as straight as possible, as long as possible, as close as possible,” possibly revealing Scheffler’s approach to the game.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Scottie Scheffler ever match Tiger Woods' legendary status, or is he in a league of his own?

Scottie Scheffler vs. Tiger Woods by the numbers

At the age of 28, Scottie Scheffler has won 13 PGA Tour titles. While he made his debut 6 years ago, Mr. Inevitable only started winning in the last 3 years. His collection of trophies includes 2 Masters Tournaments, 2 Players Championships, and 1 Tour Championship. He won all 3 of the events this year along with 4 other titles to end up at 7 titles for the official season. His gold medal at the Paris Olympics & the 2024 Hero World Challenge are not considered under his 7 official PGA Tour victories.

Tiger Woods was a marvel by the time he reached 28. Before December 30, 2004, Woods had already won 40 titles. At the age of 28, he added 6 more to the tally to make it 48 PGA Tour victories by the end of 2005. This included 10 major wins as well. Those are insane numbers for anyone to achieve by the age of 28. In terms of records, the world no. 1 has still got a long way to go to match the GOAT’s incredible feats. To be fair to Scheffler, he does have a far better media presence than Woods.
