Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time, and an inspiration to many young golfers. But the pro golfer was not born a legend. Instead, he became one with the guidance of his father, the late Earl Woods. The pro golfer went through hardships, and made mistakes, but learned from them. He was consistent and hard work was his key. But, if it weren’t for Scott, Woods’ one mistake would have cost him the love and fame he has today.
Did Steve Scott give the success mantra to Tiger Woods?
In 1996, Steve Scotts was mere 19 years old, and was competing against Woods at the U.S. Amateur. The now PGA professional had the major championship winner on the ropes. And the point was 5-up after the morning 18 and 2-up with three holes to play. Woods was set to win his third U.S. Amateur title in a row and become the future of golf. The GOAT golfer was on the 34th hole of the final match. Scott came up to him and said, “Hey, Tiger. You need to move your mark back.” This one sentence changed the legendary golfer’s life forever.
Earlier, Woods failed to mark his ball currently on hole 16th. However, Scott’s words saved the 15 times major championship winner from losing the U.S. Amateur. It is considered one of the most remarkable testaments of sportsmanship.
Those words will live forever!
Those nine words did not only help Woods win the US Amateur but they also changed the course of the sport. And the best part is, it will live forever. The founder of Silver Club Golf Society, Steve Scott, converted his words into a book named “Hey, Tiger―You Need to Move Your Mark Back: 9 Simple Words that Changed the Game of Golf Forever.” The book was published in 2021 and was appreciated by readers worldwide.
