In the last few months, Zhang has earned worldwide attention thanks to her latest mind-blowing golf accolades. However, she hasn’t forgotten about the roots after her success and only feels nostalgic about it. Zhang started playing golf at the young age of 9 years old only. During her amateur career, she played in many events. But the breakout moment that put her on the golf map came in the summer of 2020. That year Rose Zhang participated in the 120th US Women’s Amateur and emerged victorious after defeating Gabriela Ruffels in the final. And that victory has a special place in the heart of Zhang.

This month Zhang will be completing 3 years of that memorable win and speaking to the USGA she defined the experience like this “Life changing. This really was a dream come true.” The USGA posted shared this on their Instagram post.

Zhang later reshared this in her Instagram stories and wrote, “Ah time flies so fast.” Lately, Zhang has been very busy with her golf commitments. In April she won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. In the same month, she became ranked number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 141 weeks, which is the highest of any player. And then in May she won the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year, marking her 11th win, and broke Tiger Woods’s record who achieved it in 26 events while Zhang in 19 events only. And then she turned pro with Mizuho Americas Open and won it as well. But the US Women’s Amateur win has a soft spot in her heart.

In 2020, when Zhang was 17 years old, she went head-to-head with Gabriela Ruffels at the Women’s Amateur, which was the second-longest championship since 1966. Though on the first extra hole, she missed the putt to win but recovered it on the 38th hole. Ruffles gave strict competition throughout. She won the 18th to cut the deficit to 1 down. But Zhang won the event with a par on the 38th hole.
