The world of golf has many legends to boast. But not all legends come with a squeaky record. Several great golfers are constantly targeted both on and off the course for a multitude of reasons, be it personal or professional. Among them, the golfer who has received backlash for years is Bernhard Langer.

The German professional golfer, currently playing at the US Senior Open, has been part of the PGA Tour for a long time now. He has faced ups and downs in his career, but nothing seems to keep the 65-year-old golf icon from pursuing greatness.

Thinking back to golfing legends, Hale Irwin, one of the greatest American golfers of all time, set a record for age vs wins. In 1990, Irwin won the US Open, being the oldest golfer ever to claim the title at the age of 45. He is also credited with 45 PGA Tour Champions wins which remains a record tied with Langer.

Bernhard Langer has been in the public eye for generations. After earning the title of No. 1 back in 1986, currently he is on par with Hale Irwin. But Langer seems far from finished.

The German golfer who has eluded the challenges that come with advanced age, is now fully prepared to mark history, surpassing the Irwin’s record. In light of his recent outstanding performance at the US Senior Open 2023, the PGA Tour was happy to share a milestone prediction on Twitter. The prediction marks a unique moment in golf history and they couldn’t help but wonder, “History on the horizon?” They explained that, “With a win, he will surpass Hale Irwin for most wins ever on PGA TOUR Champions (46).”

It is noteworthy that Bernhard Langer has never shied away from a challenge. With such a monumental moment hanging over his head, the pro golfer will undoubtedly give it his all. However, the historic moment comes with a grave undertone.

Earlier this year, Langer claimed the title at Chubb Classic but was accused of cheating his way to the top. Fans and the rest of the golfing community were surprised to see the picture that went viral. That was his 45th win which tied him in his Championship Tour wins with Hale Irwin. The allegations remained unfounded, but the dark cloud on the senior golfer’s career, persists.

If Langer makes it to the title at the US Senior Open at the Sentry World Golf Course, he will break the American Pro golfer-turned-golf course designer’s record with 46 Championship Tournament wins. It is a big moment for the celebrity from Germany who made a name for himself since the start of his career.

Langer has a chequered past that still haunts him

It is not an easy feat to be on the top of a list of greats. Nor does the challenge come without obscure allegations. Langer has been facing controversies since long before he was declared as one of the best pro golfer ages ago.

Over the years, the senior golfer had to fight his way through many rumors of cheating on the golf course. Although there are certain rules that make anchoring the ball and other such ease of pace against the rules, Langer seems to take them more as guidelines. Unless a player picks up the ball from the tee and drops it in the respective hole, it is a little hard to cheat at golf, much like football.

Still, the rumors followed him in his early golfing days, and have caught up in his senior championship tournaments as well. He has always looked past the whispers and kept his eye on the ball. Literally. Langer remains faithful to the sport and the PGA Tour despite what anyone may believe. Perhaps that’s what motivates him to earn his titles and break records.
