In the span of the last few months, many big off-course changes have taken place in the golf world, which overshadowed some actual changes in the PGA Tour last year. Here is a list of them.

The reduction of players – The FedEx Cup playoff events will start with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August at TPC Southwind Golf Course, Memphis, Tennessee. And the event that used to feature 125 players on the field has been reduced to 70 players this year. And the playoffs have also been brought down from four events to three. Now only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the match. It will supposedly make the tournament far more important now than it was in the past.

Player reduction at other PGA Tour events–Another important tournament on the PGA Tour, the BMW Championship has also faced the downsizing of players. The event that earlier used to host 70 players has now been reduced to 50 players only. The BMW Championship will also be held in August at the Olympia Fields North Course where defending champion Patrick Cantlay has been confirmed to take the field.

Wraparound season canceled – A wraparound season is a pro golf tour schedule that begins in one year and finishes in the following year. No privileges were offered during this time. The purses are small, and the fields are absurd. And no FedEx Cup points or invitations to the Masters are given during this period. Bohannan wrote, “The fall events will no longer be part of the chase for the FedEx Cup. Instead, golfers trying to improve their status for the 2024 season will use the fall to chase status.”

Limited big names during the fall season – The fall events do not witness many big names playing at their events. Once in a while, top names made appearances like Rory McIlroy winning at the CJ Cup in 2022 and it will continue. Larry wrote, “We should still get a sprinkling of big names in the coming months after the playoffs and the Ryder Cup.”

Houston Open dates changed – The Houston Open will not be held in 2023 but for the next year it will be held during the springtime of the PGA Tour schedule. In 2022 it was won by Tony Finau.
