Ever wondered how much money has changed the golf world? It’s hard not to notice, especially with all the buzz surrounding LIV Golf, often criticized for using money to lure professionals. But the PGA TOUR hasn’t lagged in this financial race either. Over the years, its prize money has ballooned, becoming a major topic of conversation among players and fans alike. So, what’s the deal with these eye-popping rewards on the PGA TOUR? You’re not the only one asking that question.

Interestingly, a similar point was raised during a recent interview, something we have all probably thought about while sitting at our home. Back in 1983, the PGA TOUR awarded its first-ever million-dollar purse, which was seen as a huge milestone at the time. Fast forward to today, and the numbers have exploded beyond what anyone back then could’ve imagined.

The sport is not only about winning trophies or climbing the OWGR rankings, at least not anymore with lucrative prize money at stake. While that kind of money can be a great motivator, it also raises an interesting question: does it make it harder to stay focused on ‘playing well’?  That’s exactly what one interviewer asked Tom Kim: “How do you wrap your head around how much money you’re playing with and stay focused with all the craziness around all the talk of money?”

While speaking on behalf of many pros, Kim’s response to the question was something we all can highly resonate with as well.

Food, shelter, and clothing are basic physiological needs for every human being. And how do we meet those needs? Through money, of course. Being a professional golfer comes with its own expenses. It’s not just about providing for yourself and your family; it’s also about investing in your passion, which doubles as your profession. That’s where the massive prize money on the PGA Tour becomes crucial. Echoing the same, Kim said, “As a player, it’s something to be very grateful for because everyone works to provide for someone or for themselves, whoever it is.”

According to Kim, a player puts in all his effort to achieve his goals. And when their efforts are awarded with “bonuses like a lot of prize money, it’s definitely rewarding.”

“I’ve been very grateful to be part of this generation where the money has now become overwhelming now,” said Kim.

Fresh off an impressive performance at the 2024 Presidents Cup, the 22-year-old golfer is now gearing up for the upcoming Shriners Children’s Open, scheduled from October 17 to 20. As expected, it boasts a whopping $7 million purse.
