The Masters is an event filled with endless history and traditions. Nonetheless, in the ongoing 87th edition of the Major, history has been breaking back to back by the veterans of the sport. Tiger Woods, who is hoping to win his 16th Major title, snapped another record for himself earlier today. But, Tiger isn’t alone on the history makers list, as he is also joined by his long-time colleague, Fred Couples. But what record did the PGA Tour duo make at the 2023 Masters?

The first Major of the season has been a roller coaster of emotions for the golf world. On Friday afternoon, heavy rain hijacked the lovely golf evening at Augusta National. When the play resumed, many golfers were worried about making the cut. However, when it came to Woods and Couples, the former Masters’ winners had set their eyes on the history books.

Similar to Woods, Couples is also familiar with the Augusta National course. The Hall of Famer won his first and only Major title back in 1992 after winning the Green Jacket. Nonetheless, Fred seemed to have imitated his 1992 Augusta National performance again this year after a decent one under par in the first round.

Despite a +2 in the second round, Fred Couples ensured his ticket for the weekend after making the cut. At the age of 63, Couples became the oldest player at the Masters to make the cut line. But it isn’t his first record at Augusta National. The 1992 Green Jacket winner also holds the record for making the most consecutive cuts(23) at the iconic Major from 1983 to 2007.

While he shared the record with Gary Player for more than a decade, the duo’s unbreakable record will also be now shared with Tiger Woods. The 15-time Major winner, despite recording a bogey in the final two holes, confirmed his participation at the Masters at the weekend after bogeys from Justin Thomas and SungJae Im.

Though Tiger may have joined Couples and Player by making 23 consecutive cuts at the Masters, his route to history was terrifying. Before the suspension of play on Friday afternoon, Woods recorded a bogey on the Par-4 Pampas. However, he managed to return back to the two under par on the total score with a birdie on the 8th hole.

From thereon, the 47-year-old’s road to history books looked challenging with heavy rains. Despite a birdie on Firethorn, Tiger recorded back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes. With a three-over-par total score, Woods was temporarily out of the cut line until Thomas and Im also joined him as golfers with either a +3 total score or worse than that. Regardless, fans will once again witness the 5-time Green Jacket winner with a red shirt at Augusta National on Sunday.
