The Tour championship is keeping the golf world on edge. It is the last leg of the FedEx Cup, and the PGA Tour season is about to end. And, in the latest news, Collin Morikawa is leading the tournament, along with another star player, Viktor Hovland.

But the current buzz is more about another aspect of the game: Money. The topic might make many uncomfortable. But the golf stars are pretty upfront about what they think about it. Or if they think about it at all.

Morikawa and Hovland carded 6-under 64 on Friday and moved to 16 under par. Collin birdied the sixth hole and, on top of it, scored another from a distance of 12 feet on the eighth hole. Currently, he is at the top in a tie. But if he wins the crowning event, Morikawa will take home $18 Million of the $75 Million Tour Championship purse. But how much does it matter? His total earnings equate to over $31 Million.

In an interview after round 2, Collin Morikawa was asked whether he thought about money. Without hesitation, he responded, “I really haven’t. Look, I’ve been very fortunate to get off to a great start in my career and never had to really think about that. I’ve been lucky. It’s weird this year, with all the designated events, next year signature events, it’s always, everyone makes it about the money.”

He said he did not really care. Because all that mattered to him was that he was playing against some of the best golfers. Whether he gets a dollar out of it, or 10, it makes no difference. All he wants is to win.

“Like, at the end of the day, the wins mean so much to me that I would trade them all in for just another win. I would trade the money for another win and more majors. Because people don’t understand how good it feels. That’s what you dream of. That’s what you desire to do. That’s what you want to do. That’s why you practice. Yeah, you just want the win.”

It is quite apparent that Collin Morikawa’s focus is on the title. And not on the purse. His clarity about his goals may be the reason why he is performing so well. He has been sitting on the top of the leaderboard for the past two days, ever since the event started. It would be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Jon Rahm shares the fourth spot in the Tour Championship with Xander Schauffele. And he thinks making everything about the money is a “pet peeve” of many. The dialogue occurred when the questions about his performance swiftly shifted to the finances.

His official earnings are approximately $51,546,651. They also vouch for his success. But as per Rahm, it plays a minimal role in the bigger picture that the players are trying to win a tournament. Before the reporter finished asking the question about the purses, John Rahm said “no”.

He expressed he does not appreciate the thought. It is what is frustrating to him about the broadcast. And he did not just speak for himself. He spoke for all the players and expressed that none of them had it on their minds. Because everyone tries to finish as high as possible in a tournament.
