After blowing a five-shot lead in the final round, world number one amateur Rose Zhang went on to win the Augusta National Women’s Amateur championship in a playoff. After the first two rounds at the Champions Retreat course, close to Augusta, the 19-year-old American was 13 under par. Zhang finished Saturday’s final round at Augusta National Golf Club with a four-over-par 76 to tie Jenny Bae for the lead at nine under par. However, her decisions regarding the caddie and 15th hole have raised questions.
Rose Zhang did not choose a professional caddie
Zephyr Melton, a GOLF.com personality, has shed light on the important decisions taken by Zhang before winning the trophy. He took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “Rose Zhang told the media on Thursday she would use a local caddie for the final round at Augusta. Changed her mind at the 11th hour and decided to keep her Dad on the bag.”

Later he posted another update and said, “Rose said after the round she ‘really did want to layup,’ but ultimately she and her dad decided going for the green was the play.” The novice golfer has achieved enough victories to understand that something so significant rarely comes to them so readily. She considered the Augusta National Women’s Amateur to be the pinnacle of her outstanding amateur career. However, it ended up being her hardest challenge.

Many people did not appreciate her decision to have her father on the bag. Stanford coach Anne Walker didn’t like the decision to go for the green with her father on her bag.

However, Zhang had an explanation for her decision. “On 15 it was definitely a very difficult decision,” Zhang said. “I really did want to layup, but my dad and I were talking through the shot.” She felt secure but was furious with herself for having opened that entryway so widely.
What happened at hole 15?
The golfer had a five-shot advantage and was 4-over par after seven holes. Zhang made a poor choice to go for the green on the par-5 15th hole and ended up in the sea. The amateur also had to witness Jenny Bae attempt a 20-foot birdie putt on the opening playoff hole in hopes of winning. Thankfully, Zhang overcame all of it. The only simple shot she made on Saturday was her final one, which she tapped in for par from a close range on the second extra hole to defeat Bae in an unexpected playoff.

Zhang also put forwarder views and said, “I feel like when your swing is uncomfortable, it’s always very hard to play on a very difficult golf course, and Augusta National is no exception. Especially with it being such a big stage, every mistake is sort of magnified.” Therefore she believes that being able to get back on track was her biggest feat. Earlier, she shattered Lydia Ko’s record and now has achieved great heights.
