The golfers are giving it their all in a bid to make it to the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings so that they can play at the TOUR Championship next week. And atop the leaderboard after the second round of the BMW Championship, the second event of the playoffs, is none other than Max Homa. He caught the attention of the whole golf world with a unique record on the second day.
The American professional has taken a big lead over the others in the field to put himself in a good position in regard to the winner’s cut of $3.6 million out of the $20 million prize purse. But there is an even bigger motivation for him to keep up his good work over the next two rounds. Let’s dive into the story.

At present six-placed on the Ryder Cup rankings, Max Homa is on the lookout for automatic qualification for the upcoming Ryder Cup. It may be noted that six players qualify on their own based on their performance, and the rest six will have to rely on US Team captain Zach Johnson who uses his discretion in their selection.
Addressing a press conference after a record-breaking second round of the BMW Championship which saw him turn in an eight-under, Homa mentioned the talk he had with Johnson regarding his place in the team. The 32-year-old told the skipper that he was kissing up to him to which he replied, “I’d like to not have to pick you,” emphasizing how Johnson wants Max to qualify on his own.
The 8X PGA Tour winner revealed that had been his plan all along, to qualify on his own, without the help of Zach Johnson. “That’s been kind of my goal since these Playoffs started, to get into that top 6.”
At this rate, Homa won’t need Zach Johnson in any way. His Friday’s eight-under brought the spotlight totally on him. It was the second time in his professional career that Homa had scored an eight-under. Last year, during the Tour Championship, he had achieved the similar feat. And now all he has to do is finish in the top-two to guarantee himself a place in the Ryder Cup.

The American golfer, on Friday, exhibited a stellar performance at the Olympia Fields North Course to register an overall score of 10-under-par 130 in the first two rounds. Homa was able to place his name amongst the top contenders as he had a fabulous second round where he scored a staggering 8-under 62, setting a new course record. He made 10 birdies on the day which helped him to a two-shot lead over Chris Kirk, currently placed second at 132 (-4).
Homa has had an impressive season with two wins and a total of ten top-ten finishes. He emerged victorious at the 2022 Fortinet Championship with a score of 272 (-16) and at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open with a score of 13-under 275. He will look to keep his momentum as the golfer aims for the FedEx Cup title and a spot in the American team.
