One of the most fun parts about events in golf is the Pro-Am Tour. In them, golf professionals pair up with celebrity amateurs to compete on the course before the actual event starts. Fans often look forward to watching these fun-filled rounds. But they aren’t the only ones! Even the pros eagerly await the casual pro-am rounds. Rory McIlroy is one such excited golfer, and this week he paired up with MLB legend CC Sabathia. After their round, his statement about the pitcher is sure to stir a controversy!

Rory McIlroy dishes out a controversial MLB statement 

The Irishman is currently playing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week. Ahead of the official event beginning, he competed in the Pro-Am on Wednesday. There, the PGA Tour star shared the course with the former New York Yankees pitcher, CC Sabathia, who retired in 2019. The humongous 6’6″ MLB legend partnered up with the 5’9″ Irishman garnered a lot of attention from the public.

On Wednesday, during the press conference, the 23-time PGA Tour winner was even asked about how he felt playing alongside the baseball great and whether their pairing was “unique.” McIlroy replied, “It was,” letting out a laugh. “He’s a big man.”

The Irishman voiced his admiration for his pro-am partner. “I wasn’t into baseball that much growing up, but I know that he was a legend of the game,” he stated. “[He] obviously played for arguably the biggest team in baseball.” But McIlroy knew that his bold claim was bound to be opposed. “Some people might argue with me on that,” he said. Well, the 4-time major winner may have just ignited an MLB world riot.

The 23-time PGA Tour winner explained in the interview why he eagerly looked forward to Pro-Ams. To him, the experiences were one of a kind, because they provided players with the opportunity could learn and understand the mindset of athletes from other sports, and maybe better their own game with it. “It’s wonderful to get to play with all these former athletes and sort of pick their brain on how they went about trying to master their craft,” he stated.

The PGA Tour star added that he felt like even all the peek the event gave him into the minds of the other athletes could sometimes be applied to golf too. “I feel like you can always pick up little things from them that you can maybe try to cross over into your sport,” he said.
