Is Miles Russell the next Tiger Woods, or is it too soon to make such comparisons?

Miles Russell is a name that has been in every golf enthusiast’s mind for the past few years. The young prodigy has won the Junior PGA Championship and Junior PLAYERS at just the age of 14. Later, just after turning 15, he surpassed the record of Tiger Woods by winning the AJGA’s Player of the Year Award.

Russell’s achievements since a young age and elite shot game have impressed the fans and even experts. It has also helped him get the title of young Tiger Woods. reading about his achievements and skills, every new follower of the sport would imagine Russell as an early-grown player. However, this is not the case with him. He is 5-foot-7, and weighs 135 pounds, just like an average high school goer. What sets him apart is the game and skills he has developed. His incredible performance at a young age has resulted in him securing the No. 1 spot and his NIL deals with some of the greatest brands.

NIL deals or name, image, and likeness is an agreement between the player and third party that allows student-athletes to get compensated for using the personal brand. There are, however, restrictions based on the locality for student-athletes. However, Russell lives in Jacksonville Beach, Florida and as per the law school athletes are allowed to sign NIL deals.

As of now, Russell has signed three NIL deals including Transcend Capital Advisors, TaylorMade, and Nike. David Abeles, TaylorMade CEO and President said after signing the deal; “Miles’ record-setting success at his young age is nothing short of remarkable and we are excited he chose us to support him in his growth as a golfer to continue to accomplish his career goals. Identifying and developing the top junior talent in the world has always been a priority for us at TaylorMade.”

On the other hand, Transcend has been a supporter of professional golf. To build a long-term relationship with the soon-to-be pro, this deal is just the beginning. Apart from Miles Russell, Transcend has signed a deal with Yana Wilson junior girls’ No.1 player, Blade Brown, and Tennessee, who are Russell’s competitors ranked No.2 and No.5 respectively. A few years back, it was not heard or thought that elite junior or college players could get paid similarly to the pros. But now things have changed to players getting the privilege of signing unlimited virtual NIL deals.

Just like the pro golfers, where deals and endorsement ranges to nine figures. NIL deal’s potential is driven by impressions from social media or television. Not just this, but even a main chest logo for amateurs could go up to $50,000 annually, and a club/ hat deal for $25,000. Times have changed and so have the deal limits. Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland like players experienced different college stardom where free irons, uniforms, and scholarship dollars were the limit.

The NCAA legalized NIL from July 2021. Since then, almost 30 states have passed the NIL legislation. More than 4,50,000 student-athletes have signed NIL deals across sports. While in golf, some of the renowned athletes who have signed the deal are Ben James, Blades Brown, Carson Lundell, Canon Claycomb, Kaila Bonawitz, Nick Dunlap, and John Daly II.
