Did Mike Weir's captaincy really derail Jason Day's game, or is Day just past his prime?

What were your thoughts when Mike Weir was named captain of Team International for the Presidents Cup? While some may have questioned his abilities as a captain for whatever reasons, those doubts are likely more prominent now. The controversy began when Weir chose not to play Jason Day, despite his strong performance on Friday.

After the Saturday Foursomes, the Americans led with an 11-7 score in Montreal. Coming to Sunday singles, the International team’s every decision needed to be very intricate, after all, they needed to win the tournament and end a 26-year-long drought. Mike Weir chose Jason Day to play against 2x major winner Xander Schauffele. Was it a bad decision? Seems like it. After nine holes, Day only managed to win on 2nd hole, meanwhile, Schauffele had won 6.

Witnessing the result so far team International’s fans are angry. One fan shared a post on X and expressed their frustration with a long caption. They wrote, “The 2 worst things you can do are ride your players in every session, or leave them totally cold. Weir did both. It’s understandable, sorta, but this rout was also predictable.” Highlighting that Mike Weir chose not to have Day on the course on Saturday which cooled down his body and now he is unable to perform at the crucial moment.

Team Internationals were looking good after Friday’s Foursomes as the score was 5-5. However, Weir’s strategy backfired and this fan was agitated, “That blame rests squarely on Mike Weir. They had an insane amount of momentum after Friday and he completely f–ked the team’s morale with his ridiculous strategy to roll out the same pairings in the afternoon and benching leaders like J-Day for the whole day.” On Friday, Jason Day along with Christiaan Bezuidenhout won against Brian Harman and Max Homa. Expressing similar sentiments towards this decision another added “Laughable captaincy, as expected.”

On Friday team Internationals won each of their foursomes, clean sweeping the American squad. Coming to Saturday morning four-balls things went haywire as the day ended in favour of the American team. The international team looked nothing but good this year with big names on it this year with the golfers who have shown tremendous performance this year. One fan talked about that sayingIt’s been 24 hours and I still cannot wrap my head around why on f–king earth Mike Weir benched Jason Day for ALL of Saturday in a #PresidentsCup …maybe the dumbest move of the whole week.” Believing that if Day had played on Saturday, the momentum could have shifted in Team International’s favor he was pumped up from Friday.

Another fan talked about Weir’s Friday and Saturday decisions saying “Mike Weir I retract my apology after yesterday. Awful golf,” as even on Saturday afternoon Foursomes only Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith were able to win from Team International’s side, and Weir’s decision helped the Team USA to dominate both foursomes and fourball matches on the third day of the tournament. Confused about the team International’s captain’s decision another added “Yeah – it made no sense.”
