It was heartbreaking at first that a star like Lexi Thompson, an exceptionally talented golfer and an advocate for women’s golf, would be leaving the golf greens sooner than expected. The 2-time major winner announced her decision, as the LPGA Tour reported. “While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time.” She explained that after the 2024 season ends, Thompson would not be seen at the LPGA Tour events.
However, there is a twist. As of late, the 11-time LPGA Tour winner has been hesitant to confirm that she may retire in 2025. During one of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship conference, Thompson talking about her decision, said, “Golf is a crazy game, so I’m not going to look too far ahead.” Now, after the third round, the LPGA star has again hinted at a rather uncertain future plan.

At the third round press conference, the reporter was curious: if Lexi Thompson followed through with her retirement plan, the 2024 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship would likely be her last at this major. As such, they asked her if she would have more of a go-for-broke attitude while playing the final round at the Sahalee Country Club.
Thompson, being a veteran of the game, explained the difficulty of having such an attitude. The 29-year-old clarified, “I can’t say it’s really possible on a golf course like this.” Rather, Thompson added that even if she wanted to tackle the Sahalee CC, it was “more of a golf course that you have to play smart and strategize on a few of the holes,” she said.
Furthermore, she explained that the greens would probably tuck more on the final day and the golfers would be aiming for the center and a par putt rather than a birdie. So instead of going all out, she would play just like herself. Now on to it being one of her last major starts, Thompson stated, “Yeah, might be my last one; might not. Who knows. It’s just day by day. Just going to go out there, embrace the fans, love the walk and see where it goes.”
What are the chances that Thompson might win the second major of her career at the 2024 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship? How has her performance been at the LPGA Tour this season and does it set up for a triumph on the final day?

Analyzing Thompson’s 2024 season
Notably, Lexi Thompson’s 2024 season had been a rollercoaster. Before the start of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the 11-time LPGA Tour winner has made eight starts on the LPGA Tour. Out of which, Thompson had unfortunately missed five cuts. On the other hand, the three events that she played to completion did not have a bad finish.

In two events, Thompson was T2 and T3 at the Meijer LPGA Classic and Ford Championship, respectively. And a T16 finish at the LPGA Drive On Championship. Statistically, either she was playing too badly or well enough. And at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Thompson has followed the latter pattern. She was the leading after the first round and after the third, Thompson took a spot at T5.
She carded 1 over 73 in the third round, but because of her excellent performance in the first two, Thompson remained in the top five. If things go in favor of Thompson, the chances are, it might be the ultimate push for the LPGA star to take back her retirement decision and stay put.
