The $3 billion merger deadline is just one week away. Once finalized, it will bring a plethora of changes to the golf world. And the mastermind behind it is Jay Monahan, who worked in the utmost secrecy to frame it in the first place. But since its announcement in June, the reputation of Monahan has suffered massively. And it turns out famous writer Alan Shipnuck also took a shot at him some time ago.
Shipnuck is among the best-known journalists out there. Over the numerous decades of his career, he has released nine books, each one giving the fans intricate and previously unknown insights into the golf world. One of his books, ‘LIV and LET Die’, had a harsh and hitting incident portraying the Tour Commissioner in a not-very good light against the European Tour.

With the merger, Jay Monahan intends to make peace with LIV Golf and probably create a new outlook toward the sport. Although the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour are now in a peaceful and mutually beneficial alliance, this was not always the case. In his book, LIV and LET Die, Alan Shipnuck explained how Monahan once harbored the idea of extreme measures to threaten DPWT.
According to the post shared on Twitter, an incident talks about how Jay Monahan threatened to destroy the European World Tour by stealing its sponsors. Not only this, but the PGAT Commissioner also talked about raising the purses of those events that will be on the same date as DPWT. The motive behind the aforementioned actions was to keep the European players in the US.
Remembering how heavily Monahant threatened the DPWT, Shipnuck wrote in his book, “He might as well have parked tanks outside of Keith Pelley’s office.” Sharing about the incident, the reader on Twitter expressed how reading about this nuisance reminded him of the approach that the PGA Tour has allegedly been using.
“A PGL investor”. “He might as well have parked tanks outside of Keith Pelley’s office.” Who talks like that? Shipnuck also said that everyone refers to Norman as a “pariah”: again, no one uses that word. Remember when Shipnuck referred to security at the London as “goons”? pic.twitter.com/mvC3eg0bKg

The above extract also says that a special task force was made to analyze the merger offers from the PGA Tour and PGL. But by the looks of it, Monahan’s deal was the one chosen by the DPWT officials. In 2020, the PGAT and DPWT entered into an alliance that currently benefits both parties.

The initial alliance between the two tours was announced in 2020. In a move to make their positions stronger, probably against the Saudi-funded league, both tours announced an extended collaboration that would be valid until 2035. The 13-year-long partnership between the two was intended to bring benefits to both parties. As per the deal, the PGA Tour would invest more in the European Tour and provide operational support as well.
The deal had already brought substantial benefits to the DPWT, such as bringing the European Tour new sponsors like Genesis and Horizon. They also got new partners in brands like Fortinet and Velocity Global. The deal significantly raised the purses of DPWT tournaments. The American Tour also elevated its stakes in the DPWT from 15% to 40%.
