At the renowned 2023 US Open at Pebble Beach, golfing champion Michelle Wie West said goodbye to the LPGA Tour in a sad gesture fueled by both nostalgia and admiration. Michelle Wie West, who is still incredibly competitive, listened to her body. She made the announcement several times that the 2023 US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach would be her final outing on the LPGA Tour since stepping away from the sport last year due to health issues.

Given the multiple difficulties the five-time LPGA Tour champion has had, such as injuries and physical conditions while attempting to maintain her full-time Tour schedule, the news was not unexpected. Wie West has spent his entire life in the spotlight, being scrutinized and often criticized for one thing or another.

The atmosphere at Pebble Beach was packed with emotion when Wie West went onto the revered grounds for the final time as a professional golfer, surrounded by a sea of supporters, friends, and rival competitors. Later, she gave a moving speech that touched everyone in the room against the setting of beautiful sights and the sound of the ocean.

Wie West stated, “I’m proud of being fearless at times and just doing what felt right.” Her voice was tinted with a mixture of happiness and melancholy. “I hope that I inspire a lot of other girls to make bold and fearless decisions and choices in their careers.”

Michelle Wie West’s attention has recently changed away from golf and towards supporting women and women’s sports. Her leadership of initiatives like the “HoodieForGolf” movement, which raised money for the LPGA Renee Powell Fund and the Clearview Legacy Foundation, has made her a prominent voice in the field.

In addition to hosting the Mizuho Americas Open and being an active member of organizations like the Nike Athlete Think Tank, Wie West has made it her mission to advance female sports, not just women’s golf.

As she made her way up the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach, she received a standing ovation and thunderous applause for a remarkable 30-foot par putt that found the bottom of the cup, reminding everyone of her undeniable talent one more time.

Everyone is experiencing a range of emotions as they take in Michelle Wie West’s amazing trip. Her career has been nothing short of extraordinary, spanning two decades filled with ups and downs from her LPGA Tour debut at age 12 to her final appearance at age 33. 

She bravely competed in a men’s event in the 2004 Sony Open, shooting a fantastic second-round 68 and just missing the cut. She won five tournaments on the LPGA Tour as a rookie in 2009, dominating venues all over the world, from the United States to Singapore to Mexico and to Canada. 

Her greatest accomplishment occurred in 2014 when she became a major champion by winning the US Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2. It remains a treasured memory that to date thrills her. Wie West is happy with her accomplishments off the course as well, reflecting on her development as a person outside of golf, and she takes joy in these moments on the course as well.
