Golf is a strange sport; anyone who has seen the sport and has witnessed the golfers play will agree with that. The result in any event or tournament is just extremely unexpected, and the unexpected outcome continues to be there even if it is the golfer’s last tournament or the first tournament ever.

One such emotional goodbye to the sport was just witnessed at the Pebble Beach Golf Course during the 2023 Women’s US Open, when an LPGA legend, who was competing in her last tournament, failed to make the cut and take home her career’s last victory.

Just like any golfer’s eyes are on winning before they head for any event or tournament, Michelle Wie West did just the same before she headed to Pebble Beach for the 78th edition of the US Women’s Open. But sadly, she failed to make the cut, and her fans will not be getting to witness the 33-year-old golfer’s magic over the weekend.

Despite not being able to make it into contention, the golfer had quite a stylish and emotional farewell on the course. After her second round in California on the iconic golf course, she was welcomed by the moderator in a post-round press conference and was asked to sum up her week at Pebble Beach. She called the game “funny” and said that it was difficult during the week as putts didn’t drop the way they were supposed to.

But at the par-4 18th on the second day, she had a sweeter sendoff” as she made the putt. She said that it was an utterly emotional day for her right from the first hole. Reminiscing about her week, she commented, “I’ve definitely held back tears the entire round. It was fun. It was great to have my last round here at Pebble Beach.” She also referred to her feelings as “surreal.”

It is certainly a sad day for the LPGA star as she bids farewell to the Tour. However, even though she is retiring from professional golf, she is far from done with the sport. After all, a lot of our future endeavours revolve entirely around golf!

Although the 2023 Women’s US Open marked the last time fans witnessed West play competitive golf, this does not mean that the legendary golfer is done with the sport in general. It is hard to take out the golf from the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open champion’s blood. She will miss the adrenaline rush she gets from competing on the course, but her plans for the sport are beyond it.

The LPGA legend aims to empower females in golf, and she may organise or host more tournaments in the future, just like the Mizuho Americas Open. The golfer is also planning to launch her own clothing line in collaboration with Nike.
