Will Jon Rahm's uncertain participation in the playoffs affect his standing in the golf world?

After 42 tournaments held around the globe, the DP World Tour’s 2024 season will end soon. As the Genesis Championship in South Korea concludes, the DP World Tour will move once again to the United States of Emirates for the penultimate playoff event at the Yas Links golf course and then move to the Jumeirah Golf Estates, Earth Course, for the ultimate DP World Tour Championship.

To qualify for these two playoff events, which boast a $19 million prize purse together, the player will have to tee up at several DP World Tour events throughout the year and gain the crucial Race to Dubai points. After this, the top 70 players on the ranking will qualify for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and the top 50 at the end of the first playoff event will secure their place at the DP World Tour Championship. There will be many faces in the field of the playoffs, but who are the four confirmed LIV Golf players?

Jon Rahm

In the 2024 season, Jon Rahm had one goal to fulfill, which was to become eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup. But after signing the LIV Golf contract, the Spaniard owed more than $1 million in fines to the DP World Tour. Still, he could tee up at four European League events (excluding the majors) after appealing those fines. In all these four events, Rahm secured only top 10 finishes; he was runner-up at the Spanish Open, T5 in the Olympics, T7 and T6 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and Andalucia Masters, respectively.

Because of these performances, Rahm finished 33rd on the Race to Dubai rankings and secured his place in the playoffs. However, even though the 2-time major winner has qualified, his participation in the event is uncertain, as he had said that the Andalucia Masters will be his last event on the DP World Tour’s 2024 season.

Tyrrell Hatton

The Legion XII brothers appealed the DP World Tour fines together, and until a verdict is out, they are eligible to play the events without paying any fines. Unlike Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton has not denied playing in the playoffs; hopefully, he will be on the field. Nonetheless, the 2024 season was one of the best for the Englishman.

Aside from his LIV Golf Nashville victory, Hatton was also victorious at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He also finished T10 at the Open de Espana and was T18 at the Belfred British Masters. Courtesy of his many finishes, Hatton positioned himself 22nd on R2D rankings and in the line for the DP World Tour playoffs.

Joaquin Niemann

For the most part on the DP World Tour, Joaquin Niemann had been a better golfer in all the European events he played. He started the DP World Tour 2024 calendar season in November 2023. At his first start at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship, the Chilean pro was solo fifth. Then, he went on to win the ISPS HANDA Australian Open, followed by carding a T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

The several top finishes also allowed Niemann to get invitations from the PGA of America and Augusta National for Masters. He also played at the Open because of his Australian Open win. However, as the 136th ranked (32nd on Race to Dubai) on OWGR, these last two playoff events will boost Niemann’s rank and may land him another invite for the majors.

Adrian Meronk

Adrian Meronk was another pro who made his LIV Golf debut in the 2024 season. However, he could not make a big statement on the breakaway circuit. Even at the majors, the Polish golfer missed the cut of three while finishing T50 at The Open. But on the DP World Tour, Meronk’s performance improved from T40 at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship.

In the last three of his starts on the European circuit, the 31-year-old posted T8 (Australian Open), 10 (Dubai Invitational), and solo 2nd (Dubai Desert Classic). After getting the 38th rank on the Race to Dubai rankings, Meronk qualified for both playoff events and looks forward to improving his 90th OWGR rank, as he said, “I’ve got three tournaments (including one Asian Tour event) left this year to improve my world ranking… Dubai and Abu Dhabi will offer big points, so we’ll see where I stand afterward.”

The two DP World Tour playoff events will be the last chance for the LIV Golf pros to win some OWGR points and enter the 2025 season better-ranked and closer to receiving the majors’ invitations.
