The 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge features not only established PGA Tour pros like Ryan Fox but also young talents eager to secure their first PGA Tour victory. Among them is Pierceson Coody, who, despite his youth compared to other pros on the PGA Tour, is currently competing at Colonial Country Club. Wrapping up his initial round with 5 birdies and a score of 67, putting him at T10, he’s striving to ascend the leaderboard.

Born on January 7, 2000, Coody is an American professional golfer who currently resides in Plano, Texas, U.S. Despite the fact that his golf accomplishments are widely known, he keeps a low profile and doesn’t like to share many personal details. As a professional athlete, Coody usually has a developing fan base, but instead of making a big splash, he maintains a low profile by having a private Instagram account with over 10,000 followers.

Coody’s athletic lineage runs deep, with both his father and grandfather sharing a love for golf. Kyle, his father, competed at the University of Texas and also had a notable career with over 20 starts on the Korn Ferry Tour between 1990 and 1996. Furthermore, his grandfather, Charles Coody, is a renowned former professional who won the 1971 Masters. Spanning around four decades from the 1960s to the 2000s, his grandfather left an indelible mark on the PGA Tour.

Coody has a twin brother named Parker, who is only 36 minutes younger than him, in addition to his father and grandfather. Parker also has a strong interest in golf, and the two have studied under renowned coach Chris Como for a considerable amount of time. Como, who has coached athletes including Bryson DeChambeau, is currently mentoring Xander Schauffele, the 2024 PGA Champion. Considering all these factors, it’s clear that golf is a family affair, likely influencing Coody’s choice to go pro. He seems to be on the right track, successfully moving from his amateur career to the PGA Tour.

Coody’s amateur journey before joining the PGA Tour

Before exploring the amateur career of the 24-year-old, here’s a sad but strange tale involving both brothers. In 2021, Coody was involved in an accident during his time at the University of Texas that resulted in a broken bone in his right hand. Ironically, Parker’s fractured bone was the result of the same accident. Despite these obstacles, Coody guided his team to victory at the 2022 NCAA Championship with the help of his brother.

Due to his excellent performances in college and in prestigious tournaments like the Western Amateur Championship, Coody achieved a #1 ranking for a time. In 2022, Pierceson Coody turned professional and earned a Korn Ferry Tour card by being No. 1 in the PGA Tour University Velocity Global Ranking. He became one of the top KFT players, winning twice in 15 starts and securing two other top-10 finishes. While his passion for the game is clear, does he share the same affection for his family and brother?

The brothers don’t appear to be rivals, despite their shared love of the same sport. Rather, they are very close. Parker, like Pierceson, won the PGA Tour Canada in 2022, which qualified him for the PGA Tour in 2023. The Coody brothers frequently appear together on the greens, so they don’t regard themselves as rivals. Furthermore, the twins caddied for their grandfather in the par-3 match in 2006, the year of his final Masters appearance.

It’s evident that Coody looks up to his grandfather, but he also clearly feels the same way about his parents, and they look back on him. His family frequently shows up on the greens to celebrate Coody’s wins, though they are not always there. They, along with his brother, provide him with support and assist in getting back on his feet during his losses.

This was made clear when Coody won his third championship on the Korn Ferry Tour in the 2023 Price Cutter Charity Championship. To celebrate his win, his whole family gathered on the 72nd green. In addition to his passion for golf, Pierceson Coody seems to be a family-oriented person overall. Given that he has only played professionally for two years, how do you think his career will develop? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
