A self-proclaimed ‘dream chaser’, Nicolas Echavarria was born on August 4, 1994, to Emilio and Ana Maria Echavarria. The Medellín-local started showing interest in golf at a very young age. His grandfather introduced him to the sport when he was 2. He was only a 3-year-old toddler when he first started playing golf.

Echavarria had represented his home country of Columbia in many junior-level international tournaments. He was also incredibly skilled in the sport. Echavarria even managed to secure a third-place finish in the Junior World Golf Championship when he was still in high school in 2011. He graduated from his high school in August 2012.

He was enrolled at the University of Arkansas. During his freshman year, he had a record-breaking score of 64 at the NCAA Championship. This record was previously held by John Daly when he scored 65 in 1986. He did win a couple of titles as a junior which includes the Mexican Amateur in 2014. Echavarria also competed in the first 3 Latin America Amateur Championships. He ended up having an excellent collegiate career. But Echavarria’s life took a dark turn as he was arrested for a felony alongside fellow pro, Taylor Moore. Both of them received an indefinite suspension from their university and were unable to continue competing at the junior level. However, Echavarria’s suspension was later lifted as he was found not guilty after further investigation.
