Behind every successful golfer, there is a supporting family. It’s not a proverb yet, but it should be. Think of Max Homa. The six-time PGA Tour winner’s dad wasn’t an athlete. He was successful in his own field, but not in any sport. But when Homa wanted to be a golfer, his father and mother stood as pillars behind him. Not just parents, the PGA Tour pro has a lovable wife and a loyal friend as a caddie. Who are they and what are their stories? Let’s find out.

Max Homa’s father is a celebrated coach

Max Homa wasn’t born into a family of golf nuts. Nope. Homa’s father is a coach but not of any sport. John Homa is a noted acting coach. Among his ‘pupils’ are Hollywood A-listers such as Kirsten Dunst, Brie Larson, Michelle Williams, and others. “If you’re serious about acting, John will bring out the best in you,” Dunst wrote about John. Homa hosts weekly classes, private coaching, and workshops regularly.

Now, John was a recreational golfer hitting the greens on weekends. And that’s how his son also got hooked on the game. Asked about his father’s influence, Max Homa once joked, “The moment I asked him about the golf swing when I was a kid, he sent me to a coach.” John Homa noted there are many similarities between golfing and acting. Of course, you’ve got to fake it to make it; his son also said that he sometimes acts like he is the best golfer in the world, and sometimes he becomes the best golfer in the field.

But John told Golf.com’s Michael Bamberger that like actors, golfers need to warm up as well. They can’t do it unless they are ‘ready’ quite like actors before a stage performance. His six-time PGA Tour winner son surely knows a thing or two about that.

Notably, Homa is part Jewish. Talking about his mother, Bonnie Milstein, Homa joked he would treat his fellows with traditional Jewish delicacies in the Champions Dinner should he ever win the Masters, “I don’t know what I would do. I’m half Jewish so maybe I’d throw in like my mom’s Motzah ball soup or something like that.”  We will get to know that when he dons the Green Jacket.

Max Homa married his long-time sweetheart in 2019

Homa got married to Lacey Croom in 2019. They first met in 2013, six months after Homa started chatting with Lacey on social media. In July of that year, they had their first date, per People.com. Six years later, they walked down the aisle together.

Does Max Homa's success prove that family support is the ultimate game-changer in sports?

Have an interesting take?

Lacey studied Communications at California State University-Fullerton. Homa is a UC Berkeley graduate, by the way. Currently, she works in real estate and is a licensed agent in Arizona and California. She is also the owner of Croom Appraisal Services.

Lacey is often seen outside the ropes cheering for her husband. The couple welcomed their first baby in 2022. Cam Andrew Homa recently celebrated his second birthday on October 30. Homa’s wife had a difficult delivery, however.

In an Instagram post, the 34-year-old PGA Tour pro wrote, “Lacey had some complications and had to have multiple surgeries. She spent quite a bit of time in the ICU. Fortunately, she was released to the postpartum room earlier today and finally got to be with me and reunited with Cam.”

The family was out on the greens at this year’s par-3 contest at Augusta National. Interestingly, the family also has an extended member. Yes, it’s Homa’s yellow labrador, Scotty. We can even say that the extended Max Homa family also includes his trusted bagman, Joe Greiner

Homa and Greiner share a friendship beyond the greens

Homa and Greiner have known each other as long as both have been playing golf. Reportedly, they met each other at the Vista Valencia Golf Club when they were just six. Golf Monthly reported that Greiner boasts the lowest score record at the Vista Valencia Golf Club.

All six of Max Homa’s titles have come with Greiner on his bag. The experienced looper hasn’t really said goodbye to his dreams of playing himself. He is regular at money games and locks horns against Xander Schauffele and Phil Mickelson at The Farms in San Diego.

But one person he loves competing against is Charley Hoffman. “I beat Charley [Hoffman] every time, I own Charley. He knows, too,” Greiner said in Golf’s Subpar podcast. Well, that shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, given the fact that Greiner also played collegiate golf at the College of Canyons in Santa Clara, California. Notably, he is serving as the second set of eyes to Max Homa after he split with his swing coach this September.

Interestingly, he also partnered with Johnny MacArthur in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball in 2021. They crashed out in the round of 32 Match Play at Chambers Bay, but Greiner impressed the spectators. Homa and Greiner’s last victory together came at the 2023 Nedbank Challenge. Well, that covers Homa’s family and friends. The six-time PGA Tour winner never shies away from acknowledging their support.
