Does Charley Hull's family support give her an edge over her competitors on the LPGA Tour?

“Golf is more than a game; it’s my lifelong commitment,” said Charley Hull when asked what golf meant to her. The professional golfer from England was introduced to clubs and balls at the early age of two, back in 1998. Ever since, there was no looking back for her. As Hull entered her teenage years, she decided to part ways with everything else.

She left school and started being homeschooled at the age of 13. This gave her ample time to shift all her attention to playing golf. The 28-year-old turned pro at the early age of 16, on January 1, 2013. The headlines started brimming with her name soon enough as she grabbed her first professional title at the Lalla Meryem Cup in March 2014. This was like a dream come true, a dream that could not have been possible had she not been permitted to spread her wings, only in the direction she wanted to!

Charley Hull, who started playing on the LPGA Tour back in 2015, has earned quite a name for herself in almost a decade. She gives the entire credit for it to two members of her family – her father and her mother. Most importantly, of course, her father, Dave Hull, because he was the one who introduced her to what she calls ‘the love of her life.’

Senior Hull was a plasterer by profession, but he had a deep love for the course. He would find time to hit the balls pretty much frequently. Once Charley Hull was born, he wanted to spend more time with her. That was when he decided to provide early golf training to her on most days. The duo would play golf at the Kettering Golf Club. Those practices are something that Charley Hull still refers to when asked about her success.

The 2X LPGA pro’s mother, Basienka Hull, used to be a country-level tennis player. Evidently, the Hulls have been sportspeople through and through. Her mother has had a great influence on her life choices, whether quitting school or pursuing golf; she has been supportive at every step. Her mother is of Polish descent, which makes Hull part Polish as well.

Family is not the only core of strength Charley Hull has. The 28-year-old was also lucky enough to stumble upon a charm that has been one of the strongest pillars in her professional journey.

The influence of Charley Hull’s coach in her journey

In an interview with Golf Monthly back in February 2020, Charley Hull revealed that she did not play golf technically until 2015. As she got into the LPGA Tour, her first coach, Kevin Theobald, only taught her one thing – hit the ball as hard as she could. That was the only thing she had been doing all this while. All she did was play chipping competitions with the guys at the Kettering Golf Club, having fun games.

Later, she was taken under the wing of Matt Belsham. He turned her into a straighter hitter and also a better iron player. She believes that her entire gameplay has gotten better because of her current coach. Hitting more shots too has become easier for her. “Back then, if there was a back-right pin I would hit a draw; now I would hit a fade. Just stuff like that. My coach, Matt Belsham, has got that into me”, said Hull about her Belsham.

It was under his training that she bagged the second victory of her career at The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America in September 2022. However, she has been pretty much winless ever since. But it looks like, finally, the duo might bring about magic at the St. Andrews Links. Charley Hull is currently in the lead after the opening round of the AIG Women’s Open, one stroke ahead of Ruoning Yin and Nelly Korda. Will she be able to lift the third trophy, and win her first Major? Stay tuned to find out!
