Cameron Young is a rising star in American golf. He was born on May 7, 1997, in Scarborough, NY. He developed a passion for the sport in high school, where he played for the Fordham Preparatory School golf team in The Bronx. After graduating in 2019 with a degree in Economics from Wake Forest University, Young turned professional, dedicating himself fully to golf.

His first event on the PGA Tour was the 2019 US Open, where he missed the cut after scoring a disappointing 9-over through the first two rounds. The 27-year-old started playing full-time on the Tour in 2022. Young is yet to grab his first Tour victory. But through thick and thin, one thing has remained constant for him: his support systems. 

His parents David Young and Barbara Young have supported him in every decision he took. David plays the most important part in his golfing journey. He was the director of golf at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club. It was him who introduced Young to the sport, and there was no going back ever since. He coached his son and helped him understand the basics of golf. He was instrumental, along with his mom, who played golf, and his aunt, who is a teaching professional.

“We think a lot alike,” said David Young during the 2022 PGA Championship. “When we golf together when we hit balls together, it never feels forced… even when we work on his swing.” Cameron Young’s mother, Barbara, has been a strong support system throughout his amateur career. An avid golf enthusiast, Barbara was once an aspiring LPGA golfer but chose not to pursue a professional career. Instead, she dedicated herself to being a homemaker, focusing on supporting his golfing journey. Well, it was a given that golf did run deep in the blood of Cameron Young, leaving no question as to why he is so passionate about the sport.

During the PGA Championship 2022, Cameron Young and David Young shared how their relationship is, both on and off the course.

Cameron Young and David Young have a very easygoing relationship

David Young and Cameron Young have been playing rounds of golf together to improve his game. And well, they are not the stereotypical student-coach duo. After every match, instead of going through every single hole and shot and figuring out the mistakes, they have a rather healthy approach to seeing things. “If he plays well, there is not much to talk about. If he plays okay, we may chat about a few things. If he does not play how he wants to, that’s when I just let him vent for a while,” said David Young. 

“It’s a really, really easy relationship for us. It’s not real tricky. First and foremost, he’s my son, and most of the time is spent in that relationship. Every once in a while, we’ll do a little work if he needs to. And mostly it’s him tinkering, finding something that he thinks works, just making sure it makes sense, and looks OK, and makes sense from a mechanics standpoint,” continued the golfer’s father.

Every time the PGA Tour player goes for completion, his father sees him play on the television, but the 2022 PGA Championship was special as he was on-site at Southern Hill to watch him live, and, well, it did turn out to be lucky for him too. Young finished with an impressive T3.
