A bitter experience with one’s own former coach can be one of those unwanted encounters no athlete ever wants to go through. Yet, the winner of the 2024 US Open, Bryson DeChambeau had to face it quite publicly. But who is this former coach of DeChambeau who is making the headlines at the moment? Let us briefly explore Mike Schy, the coach himself, and the present beef he has with DeChambeau.
Mike Schy’s accomplishments
He became a PGA Tour Pro in 1990. Moreover, he also ranked among the Top 4 Junior golfers and was declared to be the medalist of the US Junior Amateur Qualifying tournament in 1978. The official site also stated, “Mike also played for the Fresno State University Golf Team from 1979-1984. Today he is known by many professionals across the country, partnering with stars like Bryson DeChambeau & Bill Glassen.”

Mike Schy as a coach
Schy owns the ‘Golf Performance Institution’ where he teaches and builds golfers. DeChambeau was one of the biggest names who was taught under him. This PGA Tour coach and Director of Instruction has a range of coaching experiences and philosophy. The coach has previously stated, “Fitting clubs is like buying a pair of shoes. Of course, you’re going to try them on before you buy them. Golf clubs are no different. Club fitting is ‘absolutely essential.'”
Some of his notable student achievements are 2016 Masters Tournament Silver Cup recipient (low amateur), 2015 NCAA Men’s Individual Championship, 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship, 2016 Mountain West Championship First Place as well as 2015 Australian Masters Runner Up. Outside of this, his students have also given him records at the 91st California State Fair Championship, the 2014 LasPo Open Championship, and a course record of 60 at Belmont CC. Moreover, he also suggested how his students have participated in, “President’s Cup, Ryder’s Cup, PGA and many more.”
About his coaching, DeChambeau once told Golf World, “After a couple of years of guidance from Mike, we came up with a single-plane swing from The Golfing Machine that’s called a ‘zero shifting motion’ more technically. I picked a certain specific set of variations for my components and made my golf swing what it is today.”

With DeChambeau’s LIV Golf career earnings in addition to his US Open winner’s share, $2.5 million is not a big hurdle. Yet, the golfer claimed how Schy had tried to extort,“$125,000 for two years.” DeChambeau revealed that he could give that money at any time but he would want the money to sustain. This was not maintained in the business plan with Schy.
Two days ago, Schy publicly posted a statement. It was the dissolving of the Jon DeChambeau Memorial Junior Tour Central Valley because of a lack of funding. Schy thus threw mud at his former student for not paying up. He wrote on his Instagram, “Bryson has decided this was not a priority to him offering only to loan money to his Father’s namesake.”
Schy also explained, “It is truly with a heavy heart we can not move forward. Bryson stated how much he hates nonprofits and would only loan money to his father’s namesake and needed to make money on it. Yet even that never came close to materializing and the longer it took the more uncomfortable myself and others were with taking on debt.” Shy claimed to be disappointed with DeChambeau. But he also wrote the disappointment might be shared by Bryson DeChambeau’s father.

According to Golf.com, Bryson explained how his decision has been made purely from a business standpoint. He said, “It’s quite disappointing how he’s turned this and spun this. It’s a non-recourse loan that was going out. I gave him my dad’s name, image, and likeness for free on the assumption we’d have a good business plan and it just hasn’t worked out. I’m going to be doing a lot for my community, just in a different fashion with a proper business plan and done correctly.”
