Adam Scott is recognized in the golf world for his unconventional putting style, which has faced its share of criticism. The golfer doesn’t use a conventional-length putter or putting style. Instead, he lets his hands hang in front of his body and grips his elongated putter like a broomstick, with his left hand positioned near his sternum. However, his father, Phil Scott, does not agree with the criticism his son had to endure and has a different perspective about it which he revealed five years ago.
In 2019 Scott Sr talked about his son with Australian Golf Digest. In the long interview, most of the questions revolved around Adam Scott’s putting. While discussing this, Phil Scott was also asked about his feelings regarding his son being heavily criticized for his putting throughout much of his career. In the response, he just blamed it on the media.
Initially, Phil took his son’s stats into account and said, “He’s won roughly 30 events, been No. 1 in the world, won the Masters… It can’t be too bad. He’s always been a streaky putter, even as a junior golfer, and can miss the unexpected short one more than others, so I think it often looks worse than it is.”

Following that, he gave a bold statement, saying, “Media love the negative story, and the public follow the media, and so next thing every club golfer says Adam is a bad putter. Trust me, if you are a bad putter you aren’t on tour,” highlighting that it’s the media who made the golfer look worse in terms of putting.
This is not the first time that a personality from the golf world has called out the media for being negative or wrong. John Daly also called out the media for uselessly creating a feud with Tiger Woods. Despite using a different style of putting it, the 44-year-old has 14 PGA Tour wins and the 2013 Masters to his name. One might think that’s the only thing about Scott’s unusual putting, but there is more to his story.

Adam Scott doesn’t practice with his regular putter
They say it’s important for the golfers to practice with the putter they plan on using on the field. However, that’s not the case for Scott. Surprisingly, he practices with a putter he doesn’t plan on using at all. In 2020, the 44-year-old talked about it and said, “I just don’t practice with [my regular putter] because then I put it back in and it feels fresh and new, and it’s just kind of the mind games that I have to play with myself to get the best performance out of me,” as revealed on Golf.com.

Interestingly, he also carries two or three putters in the bag. As a result, he is often criticized for his bad or inconsistent putting. However, the pro is aware and talked about his inconsistent putting back in 2018 during the AT&T Byron Nelson. “My putting has been erratic. Poor overall, with good and bad in there. I’m not getting the best out of my scores. If it were the other way around, I’d have shot a couple better here and there,” said Adam Scott, who was trying to qualify for the US Open at that time, as revealed on ESPN.
Despite the criticism, the golfer’s father believes that his son has delivered ideal performances on the greens and doesn’t plan on believing what the media has to say. What do you think about Adam Scott’s putting? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
