Max Homa's antics during Monahan's speech—comic relief or disrespectful? What's your take?

Max Homa has played his part in the Presidents Cup. The Team USA captain’s pick has had a so-so Presidents Cup with 2 losses and a win in the final match on the final day. He sat out a couple of sessions but didn’t make the headlines until the very end of the tournament after the playing had finished. The incident occurred when Jay Monahan was making an intense and congratulatory speech to the winners, which made Homa being in the background even more funny.

The reason for Homa catching people’s attention even when he wasn’t supposed to be on camera was for chugging a beer in the background while PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan made an attempt at an inspiring speech. In the background of the broadcast, Homa can be seen bringing up a Budweiser can and drinking from it beside Captain Jim Furyk and then disappearing off camera.

It is unclear if Budweiser is the official sponsor of the Presidents Cup. The cold drinks partner was listed to be Coca-Cola, but the cans were seen in many of the players’ hands after the final round was finished. Even Captain’s Assistant Kevin Kisner also brought a cooler in the middle of a presser and distributed drinks to the players.

Indeed, the post-game celebrations were definitely party time for Team USA members, as Tony Finau said in the presser, “We have to fight for our right to party!”, quoting the popular Beastie Boys song, although he attributed it to Travis Kelce. Fans have gone gaga for Max Homa’s extremely relatable moment and supporters took pleasure in seeing the goofy side of the golfer.

Have an interesting take?

“He’ll always be one of us” One commenter wrote, enamored by Homa’s relatability in the circumstances of the prestigious win in the Presidents Cup. Indeed, Homa has always had a certain groundedness for a player competing at such a high level. He is said to always have time for the media and fans and is very engaged with online fans. The popular golf X (Twitter) account NUCLR GOLF also posted the same sentiment, writing, Max Homa is one of us @HomaLegion”.

Others took the opportunity to criticize PGA Chief Jay Monahan. The office-bearer has come under fire for his recent handling of the LIV Golf-PGA Tour merger, being dubbed as a turncoat and hypocrite after his extremely dismissive and often insulting remarks on the Saudi-PIF-backed golf tournament. One commenter wrote, “He was totally dissing Moneyhan lol.”, turning Monahan into Moneyhan to imply greed. Another person wrote, “That’s cuz nobody gives af what Jay gotta say”.

Not one to miss out on the fun, Max Homa himself reacted to the viral screen grab video and posted, Last guy on the course today. Had to make up for lost time”. A very endearing move from Homa, who was indeed the last player to leave the course after beating Mackenzie Hughes 2 and 1.

Homa’s day will also be remembered for holing his second shot on the very first hole, leading to Kevin Kisner taking off his shirt. All in all, it was a day to be remembered and enjoyed for Homa and Team USA and this takes them to their 10 straight win in the competition of which they have lost only one in history.
