Max Homa calls out Bryson—Is he right to blame LIV players for the merger mess?

The never-ending PGA-LIV merger controversies have hit the headlines yet again. And this time Bryson DeChambeau seems to be the center of attention as he was earlier too. So, why did his name pop up again after he switched to LIV? Well, the answer lies in the question itself, and Max Homa has explained it quite nicely.

In a recent podcast with No Laying Up, Homa talked about the PGA-LIV merger that was supposed to conclude in 2023 and hasn’t. With no update, the future of this potential merger is leaving the golfers and fans frustrated. However, finding a solution will still take time because of the complexities involved.

“I will say that a lot of people, myself included, have turned on to the side of like, let’s just figure it the hell out”, Homa said, shedding light on the situation. He also admitted that the tour’s approach was imperfect. He believes their goal was to shield the sport from being ruined by the Saudi-backed competitor. Homa brought up DeChambeau between the conversation, saying he couldn’t just ask him to come back to the PGA Tour again.

“But again, I can’t snap my fingers and say, Hey, Bryson, you come back to the tour like there were rules that were contracts signed”, said Homa. DeChambeau joined LIV Golf in June 2022 and while the golfer did face some heat from the fans at first, he managed to win them back. Even Homa said that the 2-time PGA winner is quite loved among the fans, and it is a shame that he left the PGA Tour.

Max Homa on Bryson DeChambeau’s departure from the PGA Tour

Max Homa thinks Bryson DeChambeau’s departure from the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf is a loss for the sport. In 2023, Homa vocalized his concerns and said, I do think that it is a shame that I find Bryson to be one of the most interesting people who has probably ever swung a golf club,” Homa said in an interview with SI.

Homa believes DeChambeau’s unique approach to the sport and his exciting gameplay are a missed asset for the PGA Tour. He even mentioned one of his favorite moves by the golfer, which was DeChambeau’s famous drives over the lake at Bay Hill. DeChambeau did leave the PGA Tour, but his presence, even on a rival tour, adds excitement to golf. Take his extremely popular and fan-favorite showdown on YouTube, for example, the ‘Break 50’.
