Ahead of its second season in 2023, the LIV Golf Series is battling hard to get approval from the OWGR organization for world-ranking points. While its application remains in progress, another series has gained traction due to its acceptance by OWGR. The league in question is the Mexico-based Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana, which was founded in 2017. What’s more, it’s a series of 54-hole tournaments, similar to the LIV Golf’s model.

54-hole Mexican league gains OWGR approval

For the unversed, OWGR, short for Official World Golf Rankings, is the principal body that tracks and maintains world-ranking points and standings of golfers around the world. It has a set of criteria to be met which allows golf tours to apply for world-ranking points.

The Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana is the latest league to be inducted into the OWGR system. The Mexican league is identical to LIV considering its 54-hole tournaments. However, it is also dissimilar to the PIF-funded league in several ways.

For instance, Mexico-based events have cuts after 36 holes. Nevertheless, there is a no-cut, lucrative event at the culmination of every season. They also offer qualifications to upcoming, budding golfers via a qualifying school.

Despite being on the scene for merely five years, the tour has already set up events in association with the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. The decision to award ranking points to the newly founded league has ended a wait of 16 months for the Mexico-based league.

Will the LIV Golf Series benefit from the ruling?

While no decision has been made yet, the offices at the LIV Golf Series are keenly anticipating OWGR’s ruling on their own league. The Saudi-backed league initially applied for the process back in July and followed that up with another request after joining hands with the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Tour.

While the acceptance of 54-hole events from OWGR will be music to LIV, the Mexican league checks many boxes that the Greg Norman-led league doesn’t. No events on the LIV Golf Series are based on cuts. Additionally, it doesn’t have qualification schools set up for the next generation of golfers. However, it has partnered with the Asian Tour to get the best players from the East to play in the lucrative league.
