Things are getting wild at the Sony Open. Lucas Glover missed a 16-inch putt; the camera almost caught someone relieving himself behind the trees, vindicating Jon Rahm. And now, a missed five-footer from Joel Dahmen has left the fans and his colleagues in a frenzy, but for all the good reasons.
When Dahmen stood five feet away from the pin on the par-5 18th, the 36-year-old looked sure to nail it. Dahmen already made three birdies on the front nine and two on the back nine, the last coming in the penultimate hole. However, with too many golfers’ ‘relief’, the Clarkston native narrowly missed it. Surprisingly, the missed birdie putt made him the hero at Wai’alae Country Club.

Joel Dahmen was sitting 2-under entering the final hole. Had he made a birdie, the cut after two rounds would’ve gone up to 3-under, leaving 17 pro golfers out of the final round. But after his par on the final hole, the cut line stayed at 2-under. The University of Washington product finished at 3-under-67 in the second round.
.@Joel_Dahmen had this for birdie at final hole Friday @SonyOpenHawaii (par-5 ninth)
Entered hole -2 (T65) … if made birdie, he would move cut line to -3
He makes par to post -2 total

Dahmen himself moved up 27 spots to get through the second round. But who were the golfers saved? 2023 Rookie of the Year, Eric Cole, 2021 Masters winner, Hideki Matsuyama, Michael S. Kim, Irish pro, Seamus Power, and 12 others have to thank Dahmen for this random act of kindness.
Whereas, there were obviously some big names who were hoping that the one-time PGA Tour winner would make a bogey. Coming fresh off a second-place finish at the Sentry, Sahith Theegala missed the cut by one shot. So did Lucas Glover. On the other hand, Matt Fitzpatrick, Kevin Kisner, and two returning pros, Will Zalatoris and Gary Woodland, too crashed out after the second round.

Naturally, the unique scenario left quite a mark on the virtual world. What’s more, pro golfers, whose heads were saved from the edge of the guillotine, joined the chorus in hailing Dahmen for the kind act.
Careful, Joel Dahmen is a hero, fans and golfers chant in unison
Joel Dahmen felt the tremors after reaching home. The one-time PGA Tour winner, too, joined the party. He, in fact, answered a few questions as well.
Dahmen, noticing the impact, quipped that his dinner should be on the other golfers. After fixing them up for the $1.94M winner’s paycheck, he deserves at least this.
I should have a lot of dinners coming my way! https://t.co/UdPaiNktWx

One X (formerly Twitter) user couldn’t hold their excitement any longer. Hailing the 36-year-old as a “patriot” and “man of the people”, this user said, of course, that the 16 others owe a grand dinner to him.
Man of the people. Hero. Patriot. Yes, they owe you dinner and more.

One fan voiced the question we all had. Did he know that so many hopes were hanging on his 3-foot putt? Dahmen said he had no idea.
Did you know prior to making the putt?

Michael S. Kim, who also finished in the 65th spot, will treat Dahmen the next time they meet. Hopefully, that next time will come soon after the Sunday final round.
Thank you @Joel_Dahmen. Par on the last hole to keep the cut at -2… I owe you beers next time I see you. I take back every bad thing I said about you 😂

This user invoked Tiger Woods to commend Joel Dahmen. The veteran golfer’s “big dog” moment has become a staple diet for netizens.

Joel Dahmen was perhaps disappointed after missing the three-foot birdie putt. However, he clearly isn’t now after knowing the power of a missed putt. More power to Dahmen!
