The royal sport of golf has a reputation. The attire must be presentable, the shoes must fit the activity, and the demeanor of the golfers must be tense. But is that what golf is all about? It is a sport, a leisure one at that…and one of America’s favorite pastimes. So why is there a snooty reputation associated with gameplay? Collin Morikawa, winner of two Major Championships, recently talked about how the sport can be made more accessible to people while arousing curiosity among future golfers out there.

Collin Morikawa believes that it is about enjoying yourself

Golf is often considered a rich person’s sport. Most people believe that members of country clubs with impeccable dressing and a taste for top-shelf single malts, are the ones who indulge in golf. But that is far from the truth.

In reality, golf is a game that harnesses the powers of the mind and breeds serenity. It is a source of escape from the daily human race to enjoy some time amid nature, playing a round or three with other enthusiasts. And that is something the Californian pro golfer, Collin Morikawa, believes.

During the 2023 Adidas Golf Global Launch, the American golfer answered a few questions for Golf Monthly. The most important one was his stance on “How to get more people to play golf?”

Golf is an enjoyable sport that teaches many valuable life lessons. The misconception about long hours and stiff clothing puts people off. Enthusiasts can play short games with friends or a solo session to practice the swing and Morikawa agrees. “I think the biggest thing is to show them it doesn’t have to be 10 hours long. It doesn’t have to be a long day, you don’t have to put on pleated pants, a button up, and a collared shirt.” No doubt, the sport has the potential to hold the interest of kids, just as much as adults. Making the game seem more fun and relaxed will end up attracting more golfers.

That’s the biggest thing – making it more accessible,” said the two-time champion. “I think that’s what Adidas has been able to do; merge sport and lifestyle and seeing their innovation and forward-thinking ways of blending golf and streetwear that, you know, kids can wear that stuff to school.”

True, it seems like he is still endorsing the $32.08 Billion worth sports apparel giant Adidas, however, he also added, “Some of the best times I’ve had is being in a t-shirt and shorts and sneakers and having a good time with your friends.”

The LIV golfer is always excited when picking up his clubs because he enjoys the game. Without thinking of a stiff attire, simply being himself seems to have helped keep him be relaxed on the greens. That is the key to shunning the stress of golf and enjoying the gameplay for what it is.

Morikawa reveals his favorite golf course in the world

The California-based golfer believes playing the game because one enjoys it is more important. His relaxed demeanor reflects his stress-free mindset. When asked about his favorite golf course in the world, he replied, “I’d probably say Kaplua as I’d get ocean views. I wouldn’t care how tough or easy the course is. I want beautiful beach views, good weather. I’m going to Hawaii!”

His endorsement with Adidas had a great impact on his choices, but the lifestyle and clothing brand has successfully captured the crux of the sport, according to him. After all, if clothing makes a man, then relaxed outfits impact stress levels equally.
