Lydia Ko was so close to being the highest-earning player in a season of all time, however, things did not turn her way. Only a difference of $591 stopped her from achieving this. But if not Lydia, who is the player to surpass her?

The Korean-born New Zealand professional golfer, Lydia Ko achieved the top ranking on 2 February 2015 at just 17. This made her the youngest player ever to be ranked No. 1 in professional golf.

Lydia has made a sensational record in this year’s LPGA Tour season. She has had multiple wins throughout the season. Some of her wins include being the winner of the highly coveted CME Group Tour Championship, the Rolex Player of the year, and the Vare Trophy Winner.

She has also bagged the second most money in a season of all time. She earned a total of $4,364,403 in a season. However, she was still not the player with the most earnings in a season, all time.

As per the LPGA Tour, it was Lorena Ochoa. Lorena still remains the player with the single-season earnings record of $4,364,994 in 2007. Surprisingly this is just $591 more than Ko earned in 2022.

The minute change was what held Ko back from securing the title of the most-earning player in a season of all time. Apparently, sometimes, it is about the details that matter more.

How Ko struggled with fat shaming

Ko lost around 15 pounds in 2018 by following a thorough cardio routine. She was candid in sharing her experience post-transformation.

She said, “I don’t feel bloated, which I think is a huge thing. I’m trying to gain more muscle and lose a bit of the unnecessary fat. Everybody seems like they are hitting it longer and longer.”

However, Ko’s good intentions of sharing her truth with people online did not fetch her the same returns. She was, in turn, faced with fat shaming.

Clearly, not everyone reacted optimistically to this news. Juli Inkster, for one, had other opinions. During an interview, she said, “Looks like she needs to go to the buffet counter a little bit.”

Adding on to the already worse situation, Golf Channel analyst, Judy Rankin, also said something problematic. She said, “We all want to see five more pounds on Lydia.”

This faced severe backlash online. Inkster was quick to attempt to undo the damage. She tried to present it all as a casual joke. However, this was not accepted by the people. Thus, all the parties involved were faced by heavy scrutiny.
