As we come closer, to the 2025 season, the Ryder Cup is the major tournament to look out for both fans and players. The event has been in the talks at the No Laying Up Podcast which recently did an episode with the European team captain Luke Donald. As compared to the American Team at the Ryder Cup, the European team has dominated the tournament in the last 14 times. Out of the 14 tournaments played, 10 were won by Team Europe. Although overall, Team USA has the upper hand of winning the most times.
Luke Donald captained the team in the last tournament which was the 2022-23 season, but he has been in the team for a long time now. He has been part of the team since 2006 and has played a crucial role in delivering winning performances. His consistent performance and singles match wins helped him to become the vice-captain in 2018, which later turned out to be his journey as the captain.
This season will be Donald’s second tournament as the captain and was asked about the schedule for this year during the podcast. He shared that he wants the team to be there before a week of the Ryder Cup so that everyone can get acclimatized and play their natural game. On top of that, he was also asked about ‘Chapter 2 of Captaincy’, “Does this feel like chapter 2 or a whole new book?”

Answering it, Donald made a remark that was not expected by the European fans, as he said, “Well, I think there are only two chapters in this book.” Also, he shared that this will be chapter 2, but with a different storyline.
Furthermore, sharing about his plan, he said that last year there were some challenges, but it all went to play. However, this year he will have to be quick and on his feet if anything doesn’t go as planned. The amazing journey of Luke Donald as the captain could end after this year’s Ryder Cup as per his remark. But who might be the next captain of the European team?

Ian Poulter shared his aspiration to lead
With the confession made by the current captain of the European team, it is a matter of concern even though this year is safe under Donald’s captaincy. With some prominent names in the team like Rory McIlroy, Thomas Bjorn, Justin Rose, and even a hopeful comeback from Sergio Garcia. Who will lead is still a question. Out of the current list of players, no one has shared their interest in leading the team, however, Ian Poulter has envisioned leading the team someday. Tiger Woods’s former rival, Poulter has made a few remarks about his performance and rivalry with Tiger Woods. He said, “I know I haven’t played to my full potential and when that happens, it will be just me and Tiger.” Now his remarks for the captaincy could be addressed, it seems.
As per the post of NUCLR Golf shared on September 17, the caption shared, “LIV Golf’s Ian Poulter says he wants to be a Ryder Cup captain in the future,” while quoting his words the post also shared, “I’m hopeful one day there’s a sense of coming together that would enable the likes of myself… the opportunity to be able to become captain. Let’s see what happens; there’s going to need to be some compromise. I’m hopeful one day we’ll see it.”
