History was made at the 1967 US Open
56 years ago, in 1967, Catherine Lacoste, an amateur, took everyone by storm when she won the coveted US Women’s Open. She was the first amateur to ever win the tournament. At just 22 years old at the time, Lacoste, the Crocodile Kid, used her distinctive stroke to win the major. She was also recognized for her skillful use of long irons. She used her 2-wheeler more frequently than her driver. In the Women’s Open’s 75-year existence, Lacoste, at 74, is still the only amateur to have achieved victory.
However, this time the course is filled with world-toppers like Jin Young Ko, who recently had 26 professional wins under her belt. And Michelle Wie West, who won the 2014 US Open, and is also competing in her final major. The competition will be far from easy. Nelly Korda, who has had a rough year so far, will definitely give her best to make the major her redemption. The participants will pay close attention to even the smallest details of the game and the course.

In such a fierce field, 28 amateurs with impressive resumes, will also be competing for the major title. Looking at the recent event, there is a fair chance that an amateur can claim the title. If something like this happens, then we will definitely witness new history being made at Pebble Beach. Let’s take a peek at some of the accomplished amateurs’ amazing games.
Amateur players with incredible feats in LPGA history
In the golf community, prodigy Rose Zhang, is the name that has been glowing the brightest recently. She became a professional in May, and a few days later she won the Mizuho Americas Open, her first professional victory. Her amateur career has seen many more significant achievements, including winning the individual NCAA Championship twice. The US Women’s Open can also expect to feature her excellent game.
Anna Davis, one of the most well-known amateur players, will also compete for the championship title. In April 2022, at the tender age of 16, she triumphed in the third Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She took first place by finishing one under par with a final round score of 69 (-3). She became only the second teenager to earn an ANWA. Additionally, in July 2021, she won the Girls Junior PGA Championship.

At the US Open, she will be joined by another amateur golfer with a successful career – Yana Wilson. She won the 2023 Mizuho Pro-Am championship this year. Not only that, Wilson also came in second at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship this year in June.
Along with them, three additional amateurs are eligible as alternatives. The US Open is unquestionably a fantastic opportunity for many amateurs to establish their legacies. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks we’ll get to see an amateur queen rule the major. The fact that amateurs win the major won’t come as a surprise given the depth of the players’ backgrounds.
