Does the prize money hike in the AIG Women's Open finally give women's golf the respect it deserves?

Nelly Korda, Yuka Saso, Amy Yang, and Ayaka Furue. Ring any bells? Well, they are but this season’s major winners. And there are but a few more hours left to find the fifth person of the bunch, none other than the winner of the 2024 AIG Women’s Open. However, eternal glory and honor are but a part of what awaits the champion when she ends up victorious. Cue the dollar bills for the fifth and final major of the year.

The field of 144 golfers teed off on August 22, Thursday at the Old Course in St. Andrews. Fast forward three days into Sunday and there are but a total of 82 athletes remaining to clinch the title of champion and the prize money. And, as per Golf Digest, the R&A has upped the pool an amount of $500,000 from last year’s winnings to total a sum of $9.5 million. Consequently, the winner of the AIG Women’s Open will receive a figure of $1,425,000. The runner-up, meanwhile, will be awarded $936,855 from the total prize pool set aside for the Women’s Open.

Then again, these are only some of the rewards that the golfers, especially the champion, will receive for emerging victorious. Interestingly, the Rolex Rankings for Women will award a figure of 100 points to the winner of the event, owing to it being a major championship. That’s not all. The winner of the AIG Women’s Open will also receive 650 points on the 2024 Race to CME Globe leaderboard.

With so much at stake, it makes perfect sense for the professionals to dish out their best on the course, especially Nelly Korda. The current No. 1 golfer in the world will be hoping to clinch her second major of the season at St. Andrews at the AIG Women’s Open.

Currently at T3, the 26-year-old American athlete has managed to score a score of 5-under par after three days of play at the AIG Women’s Open. Korda did so by dishing out a total of 13 birdies and 7 bogeys over the three rounds, with four birdies coming off a flawless Friday. If she does come out on top after Sunday, then the athlete will further cement her place as the top-ranked professional in the world all the while raking in her seventh win of 2024.
